Yecch!

Never ceases how many Maytag owners would let the lint filter/fabric softener dispenser become crusted with lint, crud and old softener. Me own sister was guilty of this and I used to show her how to remove the whole assembly and rinse it under hot water. She wasn't impressed.

Ken,

That was the first thing that jumped out at me in that pic too! One of my pet peeves.
That's a bonus with only using my softener dispenser for white vinegar. Stays nice and clean!

Could it simply need a new lid switch?

Probably not being that 'tag lid switches historically kill all motor action.

LAT MT DC Washer Washes-Won't-Spin

Could be many things, bad timer, something stuck between tubs or in pump, if it pumps out and won't spin it could also be a main seal and sized main tub bearing.
