My heat pump quit working about ten days ago.I thought that it was low on R410.
I have a Gibson/Frigidaire 3 tom heat pump that was installed in 2012-13.
This thing has always had a very slow leak that they can't find.
In the winter it would stop heating and the accumulator pipes would turn to ice or the evap coil would turn to ice in summer.
I turned on the fan full time to melt the ice and after two hours. I turned it back on and set it at 75 and it worked fine.
I called Stans and they sent a tech out at 8Am and he said it was really low on freon and after he filled it up it was making a odd/terrible sound for about 30 secs and then stopped.
I was not paying that much attention to him during all of this but after 30 mins he left and told me everything was fine and it was cooling normally.
I started to notice my lights would brown out bad it my computer even shut down, well that big voltage thing I use.
Well at 3 Pm my lights went really funny and the Heat pump breaker tripped.
The system would not do anything save for the condenser and evap fans would come on.
I called the same guy back and he came out the next morning and told me the compressor was gone.I would need a new compressor or system.
Stans gave me a quote of 5567 for a new Amana 16 seer system he was telling me that I would not find a better price, with a lifetime replacement warranty.
I had another company gave me a quote of 4100 bucks for a Run-tru which is a Trane bargain brand.
I will never buy a Trane anything ,Ingersoll Rand has destroyed Trane and American standard. Trane has been using L.G. Scroll compressors on there entry level models.
My Dads Trane/American standard Platinum twin compressor heat pump has had 3 compressors burn out and two coils that have had to be replaced.
I called my Ex he owns his own Hvac company in Nashville and talked him in to helping me out( As long as I was very sweet to him and give him a bonus)
He came down a looked at my system and was dumbfounded about what that tech did.
He took out the Freon and he told me that the high pressure switch was faulty and the compressor was burnt out. He told me it was way overfilled with Freon.
He only deals with York,Daikin,Amana and Rheem units.
His is a huge Daikin -Rheem fan . Hates Frigidaire units which I agree with him on that.
My Dads rentals well there are a ton of Gibson units and they do not last. Stay away from all Nordyne brands.Gibson,Maytag,Frigidaire,Intertherm units .
I picked out a Rheem 16 seer two stage unit and variable speed air handler.
I helped him put it in sense I was on a budget. Taking that heat pump apart well answered some huge questions. The pressures got so high it blew a hole in the accumulator, oil was all over the bottom and evap coil cracked basically and unlike Rheem units there is no low pressure switch on most Nordyne products and with the high pressure switch broken the compressor ran its to death. The evap coil up stairs has a orifice or piston. There is a screen that was clogged up cause, Stans heating and Air did not use a filter/dryer when they installed the unit 5 months before I bought the place.
He didn't understand how a tech could miss all of that.
Well I had a video of him working I had installed cameras on each corner of my property and it showed what he did.
Houston was furious for one he knows the guy, he told me that I got a hack of a tech. He did not have all the gauges on there. He told me that if he would have all the gauges on there it would have showed that the pressures are all wrong and no Freon was needed. That guy did not even look at the control board or anything he just put in more freon and that horrible noise I heard was the compressor trying to pump liquid, he heard the noise and ignored it . That's what caused the brown outs and everything. Scroll compressors will tolerate a little liquid unlike reciprocating compressors.
Houston wants me to call the owner of Stans and show him the Video. I don't know about that.
What if he got fired and then comes and smashes out my windows or god only knows what else.I don't know what I am going to do.
Houston gave me the system at his cost which was a steal because he still loves me but I felt bad and tipped him 500 bucks cash and other things that I can't go into detail.
My Dad is going to cancel all service contracts with Stans. I don't know what I should do. That idiot costed me thousands of bucks and I am pissed.
Rheem products are great the system works wonderful at least there is that.
Just be careful and find a good Hvac Tech. I just happen to got a moron.

Sorry, about my typing and grammar. I suck so bad at grammar. I have never been able to grasp it.

Call and complain. That "repair" guy should not be allowed near any equipment.  I gotta bet you are not the only one he did this to.

House I was renting, a guy did that to the old Lennox.  Put way too much.  Outlet air temp barely below inlet.  Called him back, he let too much out.  It cooled 'OK' then but not for long as the compr'r was getting way too hot.  Within days it quit altogether and had to be replaced.

Landlord paying for all this.  We were on very good terms.  I told her every step that happened.  She fired the contractor.  You really have to keep your eyes on these guys, there are a lot of real bums in the refrigeration racket um, I mean business.  Some are just stupid, some are just crooks.

Worse, even the manuf'rs are shady.  No corner left uncut.  Neighbor in Austin replaced whole system with TOL Carrier.

Beginning of second season, compr'r wouldn't start.

This is a large Hvac service company , that's what I don't understand. I don't like when somebody stands over my back and watches me work,it makes me nervous.
The more I think about it the madder I get.
If that guy was not so stupid it would have costed me 70 bucks for the service call.
Houston told me that seeing there was no Filter/dryer and with the reading of the gauges would have told him there is a blockage. Either the TXV Valve or orifice
remove the freon clear the blockage and back in business. Well the high pressure switch would need to be fixed.
When that guy got here I could have swore I smelt pot on him.
I don't care if the dude gets high but, that day that joint cost me a fortune .
I have thought about calling the better business bureau. I have never done that before and I don't know much about weather it does any good.

You say they are a large service company. By all rights you should bring your experience to their attention. Let them know of your video proof of the shoddy work done. If they are reputable, stand behind their work and care about their reputation they will make it right. In essence you paid them to ruin your HVAC system. Better for the money to be in your pocket then theirs. No denying that if the service tech had the schooling/training he should have (which he probably did) he shouldn't have done what he did to your equipment. Maybe he was having an off day or was high. Whatever the reason in the end it was his mistake.
