24" DD KM TL Washer

Nice condition, but it is only a 2.5 CF tub, and is priced higher than when new.

Even if my Kenmore portable belt drive washer has a even smaller capacity compared to that 24” DD washer it definitely has more features than that washer does since it has the lint filter, 3 water levels, 5 temperature options, and 3 cycles.

But it's "vertmy calen and fully functional."  That's a huge plus!

Serial seems to be C534, which is 34th week of 1985.  Probably a spin-drainer, and it has the clothes ring on the basket that was added to help prevent a stray sock from going overboard.

Hmm, is it rare?

A test model perhapd? DD's weren't on the market before 1986.

WP Built 24" DD Washers

Were on the market under both the WP and KM label in the DC area in late 1981, we trained on them in the summer of 1981 and we sold the 6 machines we trained on to our customers before the end of 1981.

Years later when one of these original 6 machines came back to us we restored it and it is in the museum hooked up and ready to wash clothing in.

Thanks John for yet again confirming that DDs were introduced in 1981.

I've had that argument with people in YouTube comments who think DDs came out in 1986 to 1987.

Far as I'm aware, the first WP model was LB5500XKW0.  I have a printed/bound copy of the L-46 service manual that's copyright dated 1981 and references LB5500XKW0.  K is 1982 model-year.  I remember selling that model LB5500 at the Whirlpool dealer at that time, and some of the customers who bought them (Lilie Bothe, Velma Jaap, Clara Kaspar, several others).

I have L-52 "Design 2000 Washer with Neutral Drain" dated 1985 that references LA7460XMW0 for cycle charts and wiring diagrams.  M is 1984 model-year.  But I know there were 1984 models produced that still did spin-drain because Granny had one, LA7400XMW2, serial C435 (35th week of 1984).  Yes, I still have a record of it.

I believe the first of D2000's were of 24" units...so not much was recognized....my aunt got a spin drain version...and the first one I saw...and still had a good size capacity...

do note on this particular Kenmore as having a Dual Action agitator....Whirlpools only offered the straight vane, with the barrel lint filter...

most people only recognize a direct drive as when the full size 27" cabinet units were introduced, roughly 1986.....

I thought maybe a year or two earlier than that.....I know I got my first Lady K set during the transition from Belt Drive to Direct Drive.......Sears was offering belt drives at half price to move them out quickly....but I opted for the newer design...

That's the exact model I bought for my Mother and the family in autumn 1984 that you can read about on my profile page, complete with the "LET US SHOW YOU SYSTEM 21" sticker. I can't find an archive of the newspaper ad of the sale so I could post the sale price, and I've slept many nights since then; it would not surprise me if it was less than $250.

Yes, ours was a spin drain model, with the five/three/three seen on this unit, DA agi, self cleaning filter, and unbalance switch and buzzer. Ours had the clothes ring at the top of the wash tub. I would not be at all caught off guard if I were to learn that ours was a leftover 1983 model. And, I can confirm that units that looked exactly like this one produced after 1985 and before the '87 redesign *did* employ a neutral drain: I was visiting a friend in early 1986 while hers was in operation, and was baffled to hear what I *imagined* was the machine begin spinning, switch off with a "clunk" as if someone had opened the lid, then resume spinning. It would be 1.5 year more before I would learn what was actually going on.

Ours did *not* have the agitator-mounted fabric softener cup that this one has, nor was one advertised. Possibly, some owner added this after-market, or their local Sears dealer tossed it in as an incentive to get people to take these machines home?

A curious thing about the operation of this early direct drive: On *all* cycles including "Cotton/Sturdy", the first spin was low-speed.

Also different from the direct drives that came later and that we all know so well: this model used three spray rinses during the first spin ONLY, and NO long spray at the start of the final spin.

I don't recall that any early WP models had low spin on all cycles.  Maybe was a Kenmore thing.

As I mentioned before, I found it funny that Delicate & Perm Press ran a high spin-drain for two mins, then switched to low ... prit'much enough water was already extracted at end of the drain, especially on lower water levels, that the low spin essentially did nothing.

My former neighbor Thelma had this set in the Toast color. They were purchased in Summer of '85.

I would love a 24" machine like this, but its way too rich for my blood.

Pictures in eBay listing tell me at least that washer is a storage shed find, and new owner is looking to make a killing. That would explain asking $400....

For those unfamiliar storage units routinely hold auctions were contents of rooms/lockers where fees haven't been paid are sold off. Thing is you have to bid on locker/room blind because rarely are views or other information available regarding contents.

So people bid blind and hope they can make money on contents if they win, or at least get back what they paid out in wining bid.

There are a few television shows IIRC about "storage wars"; the rather competitive business of storage auctions.

My AEG Lavamat set was most surely a storage content find. Could tell from pictures and fact eBay seller pretty much admitted.

That eBay seller initially listed my lovely washer and dryer set at an astronomical amount, with no takers. Weeks went into months and not a nibble, all while price kept dropping. When things reached barely three digit level one pounced.

It probably didn't help seller's case they advertised units as needed three phase power or something. Which the AEG set does not, but wasn't going to tell them that, if people don't do their homework who am I to correct?

For those interested I'd watch this machine and see what happens. If it doesn't move see if seller drops price at relisting. That or after a decent period of nothing happening drop them a note asking if will entertain offers.
