Hey guys, I’ve got a question for you, Does the Millais W 1926 use an a.c. motor or a DC motor?
I thought that washing machine motors were universal, it would be a nuisance if this is a DC only motor

Universal Motor

Exactly means it can run on both DC and AC.

Thing is with these speed control is usually and most easily controlled via some form of voltage variation and that is most easily done with PWM (pulse width modulation).

And that really only works with DC.

So it's usually AC in, rectified, smoothed and then switched via an H-bridge for direction control.

As long as the transistors for the H bridge are good enough quality and well sized, these systems are pretty reliable.
