Purchased this dishwasher used on marketplace yesterday havn't installed it yet. Bought sight unseen except for picture but looks to be in excellent shape. Only problem is I wish it was an older model. The one I had in 1974 lasted 32 years have gone through 2 in between at ridiculous prices that didn't last squat. I tried to date it and came up with 2012 but I think that is wrong because the owners manual says Patrician and at the bottom of page is 1992.Hoping it is one of the washers that whirlpool made with hobart specs. By my description does anyone know if possibly it still has hobart parts in it. Also please please I hope it doesn't have one of those computer boards or whatever you call them in it thats what broke on the two previous ones. Any info?

Definitely belongs in the Imperial Forum

Your dishwasher was the last of the truly Hobart Spec machines using the Hobart designed pump system. It was likely built in the late 80's and then was followed by the 23 series that looked like your machine but had the Whirlpool designed Power Clean module in it. Some will argue which was a better washing system but it is what it is, in your case.
Be assured that your machine is fully electromechanical and has no computer boards in it. Unfortunately, Whirlpool obsoleted parts for these machines very quickly as they still do for later built machines. If you need parts for it, you will still find them on ebay or from members here but it will become harder and harder to find them in the future and even today, you will be hard pressed to find anyone willing to work on them. If it is in great condition, it will likely give you some years of good service before you have to trade it out for something else.
If you plan on keeping it running for a long time, you may want to look for a similar spare or donor machine to provide parts when you need them.

What was the number for the KA that had the stainless steel tubs?  Would it be 24?  Or were those Hobart units too?  I know the tall tub machines (25?) are all Whirlpools.

KA DW Models

combo52's profile picture

The 23 series were part KA with a porcelain tank, The 24 & 25 series were SS tubs and all WP, not a single part was left from Hobart designed machines.

Tall Tub KA DWs started over with  the 01 model series.

Which series did KA go to a reversing motor and eliminate the drain valve?

sigh of relief

Thank you Stevet for this information. I was so disappointed initially when I inquired about the age with kitchenparts.com because they dated it as a 2012 dishwasher by the model and serial #. However they were the ones kind enough to send the manuals to me. Also a correction my mistake, it is on the energy guide only that says model KUD-22 Patrician series not the user manual. I wish I knew how to post pictures to show this machine it looks so nice. Now I have to find a repair guy willing to install a used unit it for me.

Reversing Motor KA DWs

This was done with the 21 series, it was a Hobart engineered change.

Why reverse a motor instead of using a drain valve? Growing my parents KA had the drain valve and everything seemed a lot smoother and quicker than the stop/start method.

Jerrod, I agree. But after Whirlpool's acquisition of KA, they began the slow removal of differences and integrate commonalities. And that drain valve was a difference. By the time the KA 24 series dishwashers arrived, they were nothing more than the comparable Kenmore Elite dishwashers but with difference software. When I saw the new 24s at Circuit City, I thought, I might as well get a Kenmore Elite, it's no different. Just the brand label and minor racking differences and a different wash arm.

Why Reverse The motor Vs Having A Drain Valve ?

combo52's profile picture

A reversible motor is much cheaper and far more reliable than having an extra part like a DV that can clog, fail, leak etc etc.

WP, GE, D&M, MT, WK, Tappan and other DW manufactures all used reversible motors in all or many of their DWs.

I thought the Patrician model was discontinued after the 20 series, which was succeeded by the 21 series in the late '80s.

The model sticker is inside the door, usually on the left side.  That will indicate which machine you have.

Also, if you want to pursue a parts/donor machine, ISE (InSinkErator) dishwashers are KitchenAid clones and use almost all of the same parts, with the major exceptions being exterior treatments such as the door latch and the control panel.  The one mechanical difference is that ISE wasn't allowed to offer a model comparable to the Superba, so timers are not interchangeable for those.  In a way, ISE's top model, the Classic Supreme, is basically a Patrician.  Others here can advise one way or another on whether any ISE timers can be used on a KA machine.

A friend from church parents had this dishwasher.

John, the initial Wate Kings had a drain valve until like 1963 or 1964 when they brought out a wash system with wash arm under the top rack.

I think the 22 series was launched in 1990.  I don't know how long that run was before retooling for the 23 series was complete but I would guess not more than a couple of years.

undecided on kup220t6

All,
Now I don't know what to do with this DW, having a hard time finding someone willing to install a used DW. My husband is saying just to cut my losses and by a new one that it probably just as much a piece of junk as a new one would be because it isn't a hobart DW like I thought it was. Lets see $60 for DW, $129 truck rental to pick up, $200 to pay for delivery driver to drive 6 hours for it. Probably at least 700 or so for a new one. Suggestions? P>S> Check out pictures my daughter put in for me above.
Thank you,
Pat
