I am trying to tune and restore an old wringer washer (40's J2 I believe). When I go to lock the wringer down with a quarter turn on the top handle, it doesn't "click" locked. So if I put anything bigger than a t-shirt in it it pops up. I have to hold the handle turned if I want the wringer to stay down and actually wring out the clothes. I disassembled the top trying to find what parts are supposed to mate together for that "click" but no luck. Any ideas?

Are you sure you are feeding clothing properly? There is somewhat of a learning curve to wringing. There is a spring on the upper portion of the wringer head that could be causing trouble, I oil mine once a year or so. I am just a novice and I would search previous posts on here too.

Ya i could shove just a sock through and unless I hold the turn handle tight "closed/locked" it won't ring it out much. I had the top apart digging into it a while back and couldn't find anything obviously wrong with it. I've researched this before even sent emails to numerous "experts" who also carry parts but no replies. Im trying not to just shot gun parts into it but short of replacing every component in the wringer head I don't know where to start.

I know that working on the wringer head itself is somewhat complicated. Do you have a service manual it might give you an idea?
