HI,
I am so glad to find this forum, as I have had it up to here with failing machines and hand wringing clothes. I need a basic no frills washer with simple specs that do not seem to be available to the common consumer. I have either the worst washer Karma ever, or just plain hard on machines.(user error) I need something fairly quickly to replace this GE (GTW335ASN1WW).As, of now I have 3 machines and none of them seem to be wash and wear or user friendly. This is what I have been through...My local repair-shop does not fix Maytag. The line went something like it is too time consuming. I purchased a whirlpool (LSR7233BWO) I think? It worked ok, for about $300 as long as I did not adjust the load size, because that caused the machine to overflow and flood the house. Fine, I kept it running for 2 or so years until it was moved and leaked. For an additional $290.00 it came back working for about 3 months. The intial warranty with our local used shop is 90 days and 30 on repairs. The other machine I have is a Maytag Centenial (MVWC415E0) this was a hand me down from a friend. I had a similar washer to this one and found both did not adequately fill the machine and so I used it one max fill and rinsed twice. So much for saving water. I am sure you all have heard much of these complaints before. I tried to be an educated consumer, before making a purchase of the newer GE, but I only found many women who were looking for the same features as me. A no frills washer that you can adjust the load size (not auto sensing) a top loader, an adgitator, and not a huge electronic display. I do not need bluetooth to a washer, nor do I want that.
So, I prayed to the washer machine and appliance God's then found this forum. I have looked for almost 3 years now and been through the ringer. pun intended. I now have a week to return a GE to Lowes and make a decent decision on a budget. My wants are no touch screen, no impeller, no front loader, just a plain 'ol machine that will dump water into clothes and come out clean. I have used and been unsatisfied with 2 Maytags, lint on clothes and long wash cycles, the used Whirlpool, and now this psychotic GE. I can get the GE to work on bulky items only. This is after a few weeks of adjusting the settings and having it crack my sheetrock. I really think it is possessed, after I found a youtube video of one named "demonic GE washer shakes violently.0 I then decided I have to return it. Thankfully Lowe's will take it back but the only machine that seems to have the features Mom and I want is the Maytag (MVWP575GW) I have already begun to search in this forum for reviews and possible issues. I have all 3 machines in my possesion, but at this point they are simply weighing the foundation of my house down and tearing apart my walls or sanity!
Can anyone help us? I only know of the one washer repairman in the greater New Orleans area. I called the last Sears in my state but I am currently not finding anything that fits that description. Is the Maytag MVWP575 a good purchase because it is an additional $250 on top of what we have already spent. Please help thanks so much for reading this dissertation of a post. Signed, Two women in quarentine living a washing machine nightmare.

A few people here have the Amana NTW4516. There's also a Whirlpool comparable.

Are you stuck having to buy a replacement from Lowe's?  If not, the machine that checks all of the boxes for you would be a Speed Queen if you can find a used one.  They have plain old knobs, dials and settings like washers of old.  Just steer clear of the useless Speed Queen models from a year or two ago that, even though they may look the same, were great at swirling but entirely incapable of cleaning.  Others here can provide model numbers to look for and/or avoid.

Another option would be an older, low mileage Whirlpool or Kenmore toploader.  They're reliable and parts are readily available if anything would need fixing down the road.

I bought my Roper RTW4516FW from Lowes’ 2 years ago this month. It’s a basic, no frills BOL TL washing machine. I’ve been very pleased with it and had no complaints or problems thus far.

I almost always us the Regular/Normal cycle with Hot water and Auto sense for the water level and each load is done in 34 mins flat. This cycle does use a spray rinse and at first I was hesitant to try it, but thought well if I don’t like it I just won’t use it again. Personally, I feel that it rinses thoroughly with the spray rinse, no evidence of detergent left and this is using Original Gain liquid.

With the auto sense it fills to just over the top of the load, allowing for the the load compressing as it is wet during the fill. It’s not a water waster, but it fills with an adequate amount of water to clean well.

If I use the Deep Fill option it fills right to the top and the turn over is just like a TL if old, the rinse is also deep fill. This increases the time to about 60-70 mins. and I seldom use it. I can wash kingsize bedspreads, blankets and comforters with no problem on the Bulky Cycle. And this washer always spins and has only gone out of balance once and that was my fault for washing the rubber tub mat along with the heavy bathmat and shower curtain.

It’s an inexpensive washer, so it may not last forever, but I’m gonna enjoy it while it lasts. I also like that it has a porcelain tub instead of SS.

Take a look at the many You Tube videos on this machine and its “sister ship” the Amana NTW4516, they are both the same, except for the color of the lettering on the control panel.

Good Luck and I HTH.

Eddie

The LSR7233BW0 would been the best choice ... a simple Whirlpool direct-drive machine.  You bought it from that local repair shop?  Or bought elsewhere, and they did the $290 fix when it went wonky?  Sounds like they're not much competent.

The MVWC415EW0 is what's known as Whirlpool's VMW (Vertical Modular Washer) design, which replaced the direct-drive design in 2010.  All current Whirlpool toploaders (and their family brands Maytag, Amana, Roper, etc.) are of this design.  There are belt-drive (lower end) and direct-drive (aka VMAX, which is different than the LSR7233BW0 mechanicals) versions of the VMW design.

The VMW models that others have mentioned above ... NTW4516 and RTW4516FW ... are simpler and more "old-style" than MVWC415EW0.

(Whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006, if you're not aware.)

Thank you This was a Hail Mary

I am a new user so I do not know how to reply to each person. Wow, Thanks everyone. Mom and I are ecstatic to find this community of unique individuals. I knew sites like this existed but I did not find you right away.
Let me try to address each you since you took the time to help us.

gsd-dan Thank you for the link I have been cruising this site and Man, I just got saved money!

app-nut I looked at that Amana NTW4516 do you happen to know which whirl pool is comparable? Also, thank you!

rp2813 I am not stuck with a swap at Lowe's I have heard about speed queens, but the newer price point is a bit high. Are you aware of any user in particular that is more familiar with the used speed queen models to not buy? Maybe that would be a good starting place. seems to be speed queen is the way to go long term....but I ddi read in my hours of trying to be an intelligent consumer about a faulty model maybe 2017?
How would I know if a used machine is low mileage? I just found another used appliance dealer. It was recommended to purchase a NewtonBuilt Maytag or Wilrpool direct drive machine from the 1990's. I am simply wanting to know if there is anything in particular I should ask for. I will be having to shop by phone due to our health situations. Hence the ASAP need to find a good working machine. I cannot have repairmen in and out of my house and this GE is crapla. So please spread the word about it. I am all about helping someone out, esp during these times we have.
@Ea I saw that Roper also, and your profile has a link so I will try to reply to you. The Roper sounds like what I would need as of functionality and simplicity.
Again Thanks so much everyone feels like the heavens opened up and I will be successful.

I have added a link from another user of this psychotic GE he helped me alot!

Whirlpool Comparable

appnut's profile picture
It's the WTW4715. The problem is due the pandemic, manufacturing production hasn't been able to take place. So you may not be able to find the Whirlpool comparable. So I'm going to list all that are comparable:

Amana NTW4516
Roper RTW4516
Whirlpool WTW4816

Keep in mind that Roper, Maytag ,Amana, Kitchenaid & Jenn-Aire are all now Whirlpool made. THey can differ sometimes in features and construction but may share some or a lot of components. If Lowes doesn't have the particular name/model on the floor that you're thinking of they can usually order it.

The Speed Queen models that begin with "TR" are the ones to be avoided.  They were rated dead last by Consumer Reports, scoring a measly 31 out of 100 points, which may have been the worst score in CR's history of evaluating washing machines.  Speed Queen's "revolutionary" new washing system was an epic fail, and after a bit of belligerent stonewalling by SQ, their tried and true design was revived based on an avalanche of complaints, returns, and bad reviews about the TR series machines.

I agree that a brand new SQ machine is an expensive item, which is why I suggested you find a used one manufactured in 2017 or earlier, which I'm pretty sure would have a model number that begins with "AWN."  The "TC" series is the latest one, so even a used one of those would likely be expensive.

As was stated further up, a Whirlpool-sourced top load machine (includes Kenmore, KitchenAid, Roper, Maytag -- not sure about Amana or Estate) from 2010 or earlier is another good bet.  You don't have to go back as far as the 1990s, but if you did, their basic design would be the same.  Others here will have to provide model numbers for those.

There is no question that a Newton-built Maytag top-loader would be dependable -- that was Maytag's catch word -- if you can find one, but tub capacity will be smaller than a Whirlpool or Speed Queen even on Maytag's larger tub models.

There are lots of threads and profiles here with pictures of washers that would be good choices for you.  I don't know what the search options are like for non-upgraded members, though.

There are hundreds of direct-drive models on Whirlpool, Kenmore, KitchenAid, Roper, and Estate brands from the early 1980s to 2010 ... plus Maytag, Admiral, Amana, and Crosley between 2006 and 2010.

Ok, I knew I could learn more...
So, I understand all too well about pandemic shortages. I waited 2 months for a Sealy bed, because I tried to gear my purchases to made in the USA. Again, I did homework, but I had no idea that a bed needed to air out and could off-gas. Another subject....

Anyway, I think what I am interpreting is that the Whirlpool Direct drive machines would be a good idea to try and repair, due to the better and more simple direct drive design. I think I got duped, I paid $300 for the machine initially, It went back spent about 2 weeks in shop but this time the tub (maybe) had a leak. Perhaps the seal was bad?

I appreciate the info on "newer" machines and model numbers help also, being V-max belt/direct drive.
With those two options would I do better perhaps shopping for an older machine vs going with a $500 new machine? I am trying to figure out which will be easier in the future to find parts and pay labor on.

What models would be good to look at from a used WM dealer that we have in town who has been open for 10 years with good reviews.

Best Conventional TL washer Available today.

combo52's profile picture

Is a Speed Queen TC5 series.

Never buy a used appliance from a shop that does not offer at least a 1 year parts and labor in home warranty, and from a shop that has a good reputation for service.

If you need to go used you are better taking your chances on a used appliance directly from someone selling it directly. Do try to figure out why they are really selling the used machine, test it out if you can.
