I've recently turned up a BNIB A901E Kenwood Chef that dates back to between 1981 and 1985 and it arrive in today's post. Back in 1993 when I was 12, I bought a second hand one from the newspaper for 100 dollars, it had seen some hard use in a bakery before I got it and up until 15 years ago when I got my Cooking Chef, it was in use all the time. You'll see in the last photo how rough the used one is.

But looking at the new one, its in lovely condition. There is some grease seepage around the planetary hub, but it should just be the grease in there, rather than the sealed gearbox, I'll give it a cleanout and see if that stops the seepage. The 900 Series was the first design change since 1960 when the A701 hit the market. The A901 came out in 1976ish and looks like this one, it was replaced with the A901E in 1981 with the start of some electronic speed control.

I've got a wall of Kenwood Accessories that are period correct as well, but I'm just thrilled to have this as new.

Hi Nathan

That is lovely.

Is is New Zealand made? Appears to be from the ID sticker.

We used one pretty much the same as that in the restaurant where I worked for nearly 15 years. It made several cakes a day on my work days, 3 days a week. Bulletproof.

Wonderful find Nathan, congratulations! You have a work horse and a show horse now. ;-)

I see you have a Magimix Cook Expert too, so how big is your collection of small appliances?

Hi Louis,

Thankyou. I've got a reasonably big spread of Kitchen smalls, I got the Cook Expert in August last year and use it once a week or so for Risotto mainly. I bought it with Frequent Flyer points for my birthday last year, just in case they got devalued, its not something that I'd pay real $$ for. The other time it comes into its own is when I make 60 odd portions of lasagne at a time, between it and the Kenwood Cooking Chef, I can make 6 odd litres of béchamel sauce at a time. The kenwood is faster, but it gets noisy with more than one bowl full, seemingly until the grease solidifies in the gearbox.

Smalls Wise, I've got Kenwood A700, A701, A901E and the Cooking Chef. I've got Model 9 and Model 12 sunbeams, with some sunbeam juniors as well. I gave my Magimix 5200 away when I got the Cook Expert.

Hand Mixer Wise I've got some M100 Bamix's, plus a newer Swissline, I use either a 1960's Sunbeam handmixer, or one of the very last Australian made ones for small amounts. I also have a collection of 60's and 70's GE Handmixers.
The Technivorm Mochamaster with a carafe lives on the counter. I dream of finding an original Zauberstab to add to the collection, that would be amazing.

I've got a lot more odds and ends, but those are the ones that see regular use in some form or another. If you want to know anything about any of them, please let me know. I have far too much stuff, but on the upside, I do use most of it regularly.

Cheers

Nathan

That's a nice collection Nathan, and not too many. I have a closet in the guestroom full of small appliances. I'm fascinated by cook robots like the Magimix and the Kenwood. I also like the Thermomix, the only downside is that it's very loud. I came across a Kenwood kCook, the first model. Not very flexible but good enough to make a few portions of risotto. I don't cook for a crowd, so I don't need more than that. If it ever breaks down, I might be tempted to buy something better.

The first Zauberstab is an interesting piece of kitchen appliances. It might be difficult to find one though.

I have a Kenwood mixer-It is a HUGE machine under the name Viking.Remember when it came-was in a HUGE box with a hardware store of attachments. And recently got a Thermomix-it works well and can cook while it mixes. The machine I have has a brushless Switch reluctance motor and can turn from like 2 RPM to 10,000!Widest speed range of any machine I have. For its recipes the machine has to connect to the internet-the connection and service I have here is poor-no have to work the machine manually.Nice how you can weigh things in the container or set speeds and temps. Its a good companion to the Blendtec and Vitamix.
