Hi everyone,

Trouble in paradise in the avocado kitchen! Starting this week, my dishwasher is intermittently deciding to fill. Usually, it will fill for two pre washes and then stop. And after that, it will not fill at all. I know from reading threads before Stevet is the officinado when it comes to kitchen aid! I’ve had the machine for 3 years and it’s been wonderful and obviously replacing is not an option. Cosmetically inside it’s mint with no marks or rust of any kind. The previous owner had it from new in their pool house and it was used once or twice since new. Since it’s been in my house, it’s run a few times a week.

Any thoughts? Or troubleshooting I can do?

I’d so appreciate it!

My appliance line up:

Montgomery Ward Signautre Menu Magic Stove
Kitchen Aid KDS 18
General Electric Custom Dispenser Refrigerator from 1969
Frigidaire 1-18 Washing Machine.

Bad inlet valve

Inlet valve failures are quite common. That would be my first guess as the problem you are having. Do you have hard water or sediment issues in your area?

You can try a new valve (Part #4171000) but if it isn't filling in exactly the same cycle on the timer, then it's probably the timer or selector switch.

I was wondering.

Okay, so this morning it filled twice during pre-wash and then it stopped filling. When I select other cycles after cancel drain, it doesn’t initially fill.

No hard water in my area.

Any leads on where I can find this part? And also, how difficult is it to replace? I’m
Very green with this stuff and honestly I want to learn. I appreciate these appliances and know they’re better than anything made today. I love the dishwasher!

If it fills for the first 2 fills etc and not for the later ones it is a bad inlet valve, it is unlikely a timer would do this and even  more unlikely a bad selector switch, if fact a SW could not cause this problem.

It's definitely a bad fill valve, what's happening is when you first start there machine the electro magnetic coils are cold, so they will energize, as the cycle progresses and the electro magnets heat up and can no longer energize. Very easy repair.

Okay, I do have the copy of a service manual. I’m sure I can figure out. Any leads to where I can find this Inlet valve?

Not sure about that particular DW but inlet valves usually are a very generic part.

You can fit a new one and use the plate of your old one.

Just make sure of the direction and number of outlets and size.

There are One Two or three ways valves with different size outlets pipes. (Usually US dishwashers without a built in water softener are one way valves)

You can look up for a Universal dishwasher valve and start your research from there.

So, water inlet was changed. Very easy job as you all said it would be. Now, none of the indicators will light up and it sounds like the timer is not moving. When I press any of the cycles nothing lights up and I do not hear the timer move like it normally does. When I press the cycles it turns on but nothing happens, when I press the soak and scrub cycle, it fills. But and it will wash indefinitely.

Any thoughts?

Obviously, replacing the dishwasher is the last thing I’d ever want to do. The inside is mint as I acquired it from an estate where it was installed in a brand new pool house and used once.
