Agitation Question Thanks for posting this video Robert! The load of towels in the Unimatic created a more noticeable layer of suds than the load in the Pulsamatic. Would this also have been the case with the same load of towels in the Pulsamatic? | ||

Robert, thank you for making this video. So soothing to hear the "irrk" I'm assuming the pumps were different in each model. I could hear the pumping and cavitating in the Pulsamatic. I think I could actually hear some similar sounds coming out of the Unimatic pump during initial wash agitation and during the overflow wash & rinse. If so, that is a FIRST in my nearly 60 years of being around Unimatics. Also, please give both the Norge washer & dryer (impersonating as Montgomery Wards) very affectionate pats as I've become very nostalgic for our equivalent Dispense-o-Mat washer & Wrinkle-Out dryer that entered my life during the 2nd half of my age 9 life and have been pouring over the documents downloaded a long time ago recently.

Thanks for the comparison. Robert you should film more vids of your machines...seems to be quite the thing on YouTube with all these folks filming their washers. Couod you please film your early 50s Speed Queen doing a full cycle ? | ||

Darryl, yes I believe so. Heavy towel wash loads always seem to create slightly more suds than regular clothes and that usually happens in any machine. They did rinse out beautifully. Other than spin speeds, what advantages/disadvantages does one design have over the other? Hi Dan, the Unimatic wash action I'd say is superior in my opinion. It is easier to control tangling with proper loading than in the faster pulsing Pulsamatic. The high speed spin before the rinse also makes for better rinsing overall. The cycle time is also shorter in the Unimatic due to no need for pauses to reverse the motor and the higher spin speed allows for a shorter spins. I'll post the cycle charts below. Hi Bob, yes you can hear the pump cavitating in a Unimatic, it's just not as pronounced as it is in the Pulsamatic. Some loads you don't hear a thing out of a Unimatic pump, other times it is clearly heard. Not sure why exactly maybe it is the makeup of the detergent concentration and water temperature.

Neat comparison of the two washers
The PulseAmatic machine was built because it was much less expensive to build they only needed one speed reduction from the 1725 RPM motor which is why it ended up with 660 pulses per minute and 660 RPMs of spin speed.
This is also partly why the direct drive washer had a fast short stroke and Maytag went to a fast short stroke orbital transmission it saved production cost. John | ||
