That's very interseting. A startup company with a name that speed queen used to use for a series of their machines(marathon) and lots of folks from Wisconsin. Coincidence? I don't know.

They do not appear to be affiliated with SQ but definitely uses SQ's FF7 washer as the base of their machine.

New 27" Combination W-D

combo52's profile picture

Was this the same company that was going to make these several years ago using a Chinese GE FL washer as their starting platform ?

In any case they are starting with a better machine, the only major problem is the tub is a little small for a dryer.

I am going to contact the company to see if we can get more service information and also offer to sign up to service these in the Maryland and DC regions.

Companies sometimes create satellite companies to develop a product and then when it is complete they bring them back into the parent company. Not sure if that's what's happening here.

Looks like they may be using speed queen as an OEM provider and then adding to that for a finished product.

240v model would solve many complaints of the LG, etc. 120v versions.  Will be interesting to see some of the reviews once they're in homes.

If you do chat with them, John, you might offer to correct some of their "Learn" page content...

New 27" Combination W-D

combo52's profile picture

Hi Greg, Wow I did not read that far, there are already enough mistakes in the introduction pages you can tell they don't know much about the history of combos or even current appliances and electricity, LOL

When they talk about the 120 volt version as having the same cord as a table lamp and how you can install a baulky 280 pound machine anywhere they really don't have a clue.

As I have said before there is almost no market for a $3000-4000 appliance that runs on 120 volts, there is almost no homes in the US where you can't have 240 or 208 volts for a dryer.

That "history" document is absolutely a complete fabricated lie.

Maybe the Marathon version will offer a heater boosted wash temp, better yet, use the heater to maintain and increase wash temperature on all wash cycles. I might consider one then!!!

Combo!

peteski50's profile picture
I cannot have a 240 volt in my apartment. The fact that this is a vented dryer it should still give better results than a condenser model. The only problem I would have is where to vent - I would probably have to use a vent box which I dont know much about them. My current LG combo is in a closet.
I dont think these models are available to the market yet. I would want to see reviews and make sure their would be service in my area before I would purchase one. At times these things look better than they really are!

Yeah, that was one conern with the 120V version aswell.
Touting it as "place anywhere" with a vent? Dosen't sound really that anywhere to me.

The only country that appears to have figured out combos for what ever reason appears to be Japan.
They have heatpump combos that can wash and dry 8lbs loads in 90min. So gentle, quick and efficent.

Not quite sure why they aren't exported. Japan has a 100V system IIRC, Japan has both 50 and 60Hz. So a simple step-down transformer would be enought to sell them ANYWHERE.
These machines appear to be betwenn compact and full size, just taller than usual (basically, a pedestal built in). So maybe not optimal, but certainly not bad in most cases.
They have heaters. They have high airflow.
Maybe not as druable, but heck, what is today?
And expensive? Other heatpump washer dryers retail for over 2k, and they retail for about 300k yen. Which comes out to about 2.4k €.

They have a touchscreen. So easy to translate and adapt.

Overall, not impressed with this beyond the 240V version.
Having 2 of these in place of a washer and a dryer might be nice for some.
Only thing makeing that unattractive is price...

Ramblings from a not-fully-caffeinated brain...

- So it wasn't me. Their references to prior combos were pretty off the mark. " [The problem was] their approach to drying". Oh, so those 200 rpm spin speeds of most earlier units were not a factor.... Oh, ok.

- Did I miss it or were there NO pics of the of the tub or innards? Is it me or is that suspect????

- Again, did I miss it or was there no discussion of cycles beyond being able to create your own?

- The guy on page 4 of the specs booklet is adorable.

- So they're starting on the west coast and working their way eastward?

- While I'm glad there's a 120V option I wonder how much use it might be. As John said, 208-240 is available in most homes. I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the main exception would be apartments/condos/co-ops. However, I've never heard of a laundry set-up that has venting without 208/240 also being available. So if you're stuck with 120V it's almost guaranteed you also do not have an option to vent. Have I overlooked a common situation?

#10 Vent Box. I'm 99% sure I saw a DIY plan for one with multiple screens in the collection of ancient Popular Science/Popular Mechanics mags I had when I was a kid. That seems like a better option than the water-filled traps I see.

Venting into the room might be great during the heating season, but not so much otherwise.

Peteski: Is your LG a 24 or 27"? How do you like it aside from the drying time?

Combo!

peteski50's profile picture
Jim I have the 24" model it is good for washing but not for drying.A lot of the clothes I hangup. The stuff I need the dryer for I mostly use the laundry room to dry. The drying on the combo is just to long.

Post# 1131332 , Reply# 16   10/17/2021 at 20:15 (921 days old) by warmsecondrinse (Fort Lee, NJ)

Yeah, that was a problem. If I had a mixed load I'd check it every half hour and take out the lightest garments in the dryer and hang them up. It was a pain but it was faster than waiting for the whole load to be uniformly dry.

Response from Marathron!

peteski50's profile picture
I sent email to this company here is what I get back:
I would be interested in getting 120 volt machine - I want to know if it is necessary to be internet connected to run this unit? I wouldnt want to depend on the internet to make it work. Also I cannot vent from this laundry closet is it possible to hookup with a indoor vent kit if available.
Thank you
Peter Sternlieb
response:
Hi Peter,
The internet connection is optional, not mandatory. We understand that not everybody wants to connect stuff to the internet, so the machine will work fine without connecting. There are some strong benefits, like software updates, but you could connect every once in a while to update the software, while mostly running offline. It's up to you. Indoor venting is plausible, and we run a lot of test machines without external venting. It's mostly about the moisture, and where it would go. When you dry clothes, all the moisture that was in your clothing will end up in the air, as water vapor.

Than I sent a email back to them and did not get a response:

Thank you are they being sold in some stores on the east coast? And is their service available in my area in New York?

The fact that they didnt respond to this indicates their is no servive provided and no stores are selling it.

Thank you for forwarding this!

Perhaps its asking Marathon to much, but can you ask them for pics of the inside of the machine? And how its put together?

This machine would be a perfect candidate for a no frills combo.

New Combo!

The fact that they provide no information as to who or where service is coming from I would stay away. Also nobody is actually selling them. It is obvious speed queen makes the foundation for this unit which is a positive thing.
I just wish their was more information about them!

Prob and press them for information. Worst that happens you don't get a reply back.

I'd give anything to see the innards. This concept has so much potential but like so many ideas in the appliance industry they become over done to the point the complexity fails them.

Price

chetlaham's profile picture
The price is really eye watering and will only help keep this machine out of laundry rooms. Unlike upscale NYC apartments, most living places that are resourceful on space are also on a limited budget.

I think they need to look into bringing the price down with a simple timer model and way less features.

Wow!

thatwasherguy's profile picture
I almost never get excited about modern appliances, but I can’t wait for this one! I haven’t been this happy about a modern appliance being released since the Speed Queen TC5 came out! I usually don’t bother with keeping up on today’s appliances, but this is one I’ll have to keep track of.

Repairguy…
When I saw the name “marathon”, that’s exactly what I thought, too. It sure doesn’t seem like it could be a coincidence to me.

chetlaham…
I completely agree. There for sure needs to be a lower end model with mechanical controls at some point.

I, like sever others have said would also like to see the inside of this machine. To me, it always seemed like it would be difficult to keep the water out of the dryer portion of the machine on a combo. The idea of a combo has always been intriguing to me, and I really hope that this one catches on better than the others, as it is clearly Speed Queen based. I wonder where the other parts, such as the dryer components, came from. Are they Speed Queen too?
Thanks,
Thatwasherguy.

Low End Model

chetlaham's profile picture
Absolutely! There has to be a no no nsense, ideally no electronics model. Just a timer with direct control of the water valves, motor, blower, heaters, dispensers, status lights and door lock. (see pic)

This is only reasonable way to put a combo in more homes. Low cost and longevity will off-set the lack of extra bells and whistles that traded off with simplicity.

Regarding water I think that as long as the machine does not go into spin when filled with water, and there are channels with some baffles heading up toward the blower and heater housings I think keeping water out will be relatively fool proof.
