hi there. I have never make a thread before in this section of the forum but then i thought i wanted to share this stuff so here comes...

My grandparents have some relatives that are 80 years + and live like me, my family and grandparents in Karlskrona, which is a quite big city in Blekinge. The relatives lives in a very small town called Rödeby that belong to Karlskrona.

The relatives have had an very big and very old house they have lived in for many years. The house has a total of 9 rooms plus toilets and such so you can guess its big. It has 3 floors in total. Because the relatives are so old they felt they couldnt fix the house in a good way so they decided to move to a retirement home that is placed in central Karlskrona.

However someone must empty the house forst and that and they couldnt do it themself. So i and another relative got a question some week before christmas if we could help empty their house and throw alot at the local dump. Sure enough i said yes to helping them. Because of corona i havent met them very much 2020 and 2021 and only at my grandparents place when met them.

So there i was around 14 december 2021 and get into the house. The house is built around 1941 so its very old.

In the first picture we see the hall in the entre. Its ok looking. I already smelled mold in the house so not a good thing. The hall had a small toilet also that i didnt took photo of because it just looked boring.

Second and third picture is from a study room we see little of the entrence at picture 1 (The room beside the nearest door) We see the wall is looking a litle strange...

It want much that was saved from this room. The computer, The vinyl player, the lamp on the desk and the paintings were the only thing they wanted to save from this room.

Then we move on to the kitchen. One feature here is that on the roof the paint have started to come off. Not sure why but it doesnt look right. You can easily see this one picture 1.

One other thing is that this house has an really old portable dishwasher. Its from the end of 60´s or maybe early 70´s. Sadly it doesnt work at all.

The kitchen has though a pretty new Fridge freezer and a rather new stove with also quite new kitchen fan. The rest of the interior is obviosly old.

One other strange feature in this kitchen is that it has an dump hatch. I,ve never seen that before in a kitchen. You can see it on picture 2. They showed the cellar where the collector is and its basically an garbage bag under there to collect the garbage. Sadly never took picture of it.

Not much was saved from the kitchen because they wanted to buy new house hold stuff at Ikea Kalmar. Kalmar is around one hour car trip so pretty close.

One thing i forgot to mention in the pictures from the kitchen is the small cash box seen in photo 1 from the kitchen. It doesnt hold money but lots of saw needles, Pins and other stuff you use when sewing clothes and stuff. The woman in the relatives used to sewing much but has stopped doing it the last two years approx.

Next photos is from a hallway and another hall. On the first picture we see that the walls looks kinda odd. Theres clearly some discoloration going on here. Only the clothes were saved here.

In next picture we see the hall going into next room. The living room. Only 1 painting was saved from this hall.

so.. then we come to the living room. We see that it has lights that looks like Crystal Chandeliers at the ceiling. Lots of very old furnitures also. Some pink sofa and rather new two lamps standing at the backside of the sofa.

Also very old books in bookshelf and some old pictures of old relatives no longer living and other stuff. Only the TV, Sofa and the two newer lamps were saved from this room. On two of the picres we also see the entrance to a finer diner room. That room has MANY problems i can tell you right now.

On the last picture we also see a toilet paper roll in the sofa and an old type of reading glasses.

The room can be closed with an odd type of sliding door. Its only this room and the finer dining room that has this feature.

The hall in the next two pictures are quite near the finer dining room with all the mold, that we are going to see soon. The walls are in in not good condition in this hall. Nothing was saved from this hall.

The room with a key is to a rather small bathroom. Nothing cool to see there.

Near the kithchen though is a "Master" bathroom and that looked cool. We have a bathtub here The tiles are as seen kinda red. An odd colour in a bathroom in my opinion but it looks ok anyway.

Theres a rather brown door or hatch that leads...? Have no idea where that one leads too. However very interresting feature. I first thought it was a hatch for laundry but nope. The laundry room downstairs is on the other side of the house so it cant be that.

This bathroom also features an Bidet for the ladies. Was a long time i saw that in a house expect from this one.

Okay folks. Hold on to your butts or whatever. I took this pause to show you two ok or not disasters but now we come to the fine dining room and to say the least. I sure wouldnt want to sit here and eat.

On the wall theres ALOT of BLACK MOLD. That stuff is dangerous to people and i just cant understand why they didnt called a home worker before this problem become this big. I later found out they had called someone but not for the mold but more about that later.

This room mselled horrible and after taking the photos we actually closed the sliding doors both to that room and the living room just to get better air in the house. Nothing was saved from this room anyway so everything went to the local dump.

i felt that the relatives were ashamed how it looked like and i understand them very well but still, they should have called someone before it went this bad.

right then. We move to the second floor where we have the relatives bedroom and many more stuff. We do begin in two rooms that we mainly used as "reading" romms mostly. Sad to say they no longer like reading and wanted to get rid of all the books.
It was only the blue stool that was saved from here + the already filled drawers seen in first picture.

Then they had two guest romms beside each other. The first one in picture 1 is the one that has been used the most. Its their older children that have visited the relatives in these two rooms. The younger of them, a girl, helped them a little in february 2021 with doing laundry in their new washing machine but more about that later.

Both rooms is ok but the first one has some water damages in the ceiling so not perfect.

Ahem. Must breathe slowly.. Well so now we come to the klast room on the second floor. Its the relatives bedroom and boy, do we see some wateer damage right on the wall and ceiling. Yep alot.

Here comes the explanation. Around early 2021 they noticed water coming down the walls and ceiling. They called someone and it appared the roof was broken at some place.

So the roof got repaired but the person being there never checked out any rooms beside the attic, where the most damage was. Somehow i feel he should have checked the other rooms nearest the attic but nope.

I never took any pictures of the attic because there were not much to see there beside some of the damages but it was light compared to the bedroom and the fining dining room (These are on top of each other)

lastly we move to the cellar. It has a sauna, a laundry room, Boiler room, hobby room, another guest room and some more misc rooms.

The first room in this picture make me anxious on some level. Its just so creepy but cant explain it better. Its just so...

Next room is a storage room. We see a cool Spinning Wheel here and thats really cool. Have no idea if it worked or not. They wanted to get rid of everything here.

I could have saved and gave it to some museum maybe but i sadly throwed away that spinning wheel because thwy wanted us to do that.

Now we move to another room that was abit different from the others. Firstly theres green colour on the walls and also painted red at the window. This was the only room in the cellar that had that colour.

I noticed something really cool when i watched the picture in full HD. I saw a spider between the old door and the fuses box. Save the picture as JPeg and use windows photo show so you can scroll and make it bigger. There you can see the spider more easily.

This is a really neat house.  It is a shame that it was allowed to deteriorate to the point where it is now.  Also a shame that so much of what you show went to the dump.  I spy some pretty cool furniture in the house.

The house appears to be of masonry construction with plaster walls.  Too much humidity and water infiltration have done a number on the plaster.  And several of the door frames appear to be hollow metal; not that unusual in light of the masonry and plaster.  But the interior doors are beautiful!  Very nice slab doors, probably a veneer, but just beautiful wood.

Thank you for posting the pictures and giving us the tour!

In next picture theres an open space in the cellar that has several bookshelves with lots of books in them. Every book was throwed away at the local dumb because many books were really old and impossible to sell at lfea markets and sucbh because no one wants that kinda old books anymore. I could have asked for getting some books but never did.

The small stereo was broken so that was throwed away as well. Kinda sadly in a way.

Last pictureis from the laundry room. The washing machine was bought in february 2021 and workd very good. However if you look closely to the picture you also see a metal top loading washing machine. That one doesnt work and me and the friend with me worked hard to get it out from the laundry room.

That machine was to say the least, not automatic. First you had to fill the machine with proper water. Then turning on a thermostat, watching the heat rise. Turn off thermostat when temperatures right. slide a button (Not seen in picture), to make motor going. After a while empty the water and refill again of course for rinses. No spinning in this machine.

There used to be a separate spin dryer beside the machine but that had failed so it wasnt there anymore. The metal machine weighed ALOT i can say.

Hopeyou enjoyed the pictures and all that was going on in this house. An odd experince for me.

Actually the fine dining room seemed even haunted. It was a weird feeling being in there in that room.

I do so hope you were able to save those wonderful Chandeliers in the lounge?

What will become of the place once you have cleared it?

Thank you for sharing with us.

Thank you Fredrik for sharing those pictures. What a pity that it ended up so run down. Maintenance is everything we can see here again.

BTW, what brand is that old dishwasher?

Interesting house; looks like it will make a nice home for someone after a good bit of work. 1941 isn't considered a "very old" house over here, as the are many built in the 1800's in existence. A real shame they wanted to throw so much out, as most could have been cleaned successfully. I think I would have made them an offer to purchase all that remained after everything they wanted was removed.

That was very interesting. It looks like it was a really fine house. What a shame though that it has deteriorated so much. The roof must have been leaking for years from the look of it. A friend of mine lives in an old house of at least 100 years and is clueless on maintenance. He has let his house deteriorate in much the same way with the ceiling and wall paint peeling off. He didn't even know he had leaks in the roof and finally last year had it replaced. It's not that he couldn't afford to have it done, he just didn't know what to do and he hates to spend money. I don't even like to go in and visit anymore it's that bad.

pulltostart: i agree that without the damages this house would be very good indeed. Probably well built to tand long time. Newer buildings can also be good but the question is if they would still stand still after 60-70 years.

the thing that it was so much that went to the dump has two reasons.

1 their new elderly home consist of 3 rooms plus toilet. Its about 85 square meter. Not even the half would fit in there because the old house was over 160 square meters so big difference there.

2 many of the furniture from the dining room and living smelled abit of mold. We helped them clean the sofa coating in washing machine to get rid of the smell. Some other furniture were cleaned with dishwasher soap and such to get rid of the smell.

The books were throwed away because they were old and no one wants to have such books any more. The woman in the family couldnt read anymore either because she has slight alzimers and forgets what she just read.

The doors in the house seemed very heavy indeed and with great wood too. They were of course left there. All top light are also still there.
Cool that you liked the tour.

ozzie908: well the chandeliers are still in the house because often lamps in the ceiling and such are left for next one to move in.

The place is cleared from the relatives stuff and they have moved into a eldery home.

What will happen to the house i dont know. I hope someone will fix it up so people can live there. If it wasnt water damaged it wouldnt be hard to sell this place for example, a big family.

They would probably change the electric lines in the house too as well because these were really old and unsafe.

foraloysius: iTs an Electrolux Dishwasher. Age undknown but probably from late 60´s. The inside had plastic laminat with only regular metal underneath. I saw no rust in there but the owners said it leaked alot and blowed the fuses so probably leaking somewhre inside i guess.

Definitely a mid century modern home. What would make this home complete would be a vintage washer and dryer set : )

There is a vintage washer in the basement, right from the modern one. It's the stainless steel thing you can only see partly.

It's older than mid century,

but has charm, and potential. Seems in a suburban area. Some plaster work, paint, new decor, keeping the nice light fixtures, updated maechanicals, if needed, and new appliances.
The entertainment or recreation space as we call it could remain, or be used for anything.

Without pictures from the outside it's hard to determine what style it really is. In the 1930's a movement started that was called functionalism. It was the dominant movement for house design after that. Mid century modern is a typical American movement, that style name was unknown in Sweden.

Post# 1138584 , Reply# 31   1/6/2022 at 09:43 (852 days old) by Fredriksam (Sweden)

foraloysius:Sadly i didnt took any pictures of the house outside. However its the last house in a rather big collection of houses. This house is also the oldest because before the 60´s the rest of the place were the newer houses is was just an empty space not used. Te other houses are built between 1965-1970.

I think the old house fits in the category functionalism. Its built in a way that works very well whre the kitchen is and the bathrooms are and all that.

I asked the friend who helped and he says they fixed some electrical stuff in 1968 but hasnt done other electrical fixes or repairs.

You were also very right about the metal washing machine. It was a Bohus. From the start i guess they had the Bohus spin drier as well. I include this post with a good picture of a Bohus machine and a spin drier as well. Both machines were made approx 1956-1958.

Interesting mid century house. I definitely wouldn’t call it old. It should be really nice once it’s refurbished.

The hatch in the bathroom is a bit mysterious. I know a lot of 1950s houses here used to have the hot press / airing cupboard in a hallway, which had a second door that opened into the main bathroom, so you could easily grab a nicely warm towels… wonder if it could be some kind of heated closet?

That’s very industrial looking machine, more like what I would have expected to see in a light commercial context than a house.

The so called “utility house” and the “garden city” movement hit here in the 1920s which is when we started to see homes with practical, easy to maintain layouts, but they tended to be probably a lot less practically designed than in Scandinavia or the US in that era, as least from what I’ve read anyway.

Architects of that era here didn’t prioritise the kitchen as a centre piece of urban house design. That only starts to happen in the 1950s and from that point on kitchens tended to get bigger, more practical, often more elaborate and became much more of a focal point around which everything else flows.

Before that, the tendency was to try to make them disappear as a functional room that wasn’t seen as something to show off. It was probably because leading architects tended to have grown up in grand circumstances, with little understanding of how a small/average family home might function beyond a theoretical one, and almost all of them were men. So you ended up with nice Edwardian houses designed by aloof Victorian gentlemen, who tended to see kitchens as an afterthought. They were big into creating garden suburbs though, and you’d find most of the homes are long since remodelled inside, but that’s also why a lot of houses of that era (in their original layouts) also tended to have no laundry room / utility areas, so the laundry machines (when they arrived) tended to originally be in the kitchen, or the garage.

From what I gather Scandinavian design was a few decades ahead of us on that kind of thing.

That’s an example of a 1920s street in suburban on the Northside of Dublin:
