Hi guys

I was wondering if anyone knows the BTU/h rating of these dryers when set to delicate versus normal?

Also, does the target exhaust temperature remain the same on both settings or is it reduced for the delicate setting?

Finally, it is possible to make any adjustments to the valve's target exhaust temp setting or is that not adjustable?

Thank you!

Mark

From what I understand about these dryers, it starts out at the full 37,000 btu heat output and as things heat up, it gradually throttles the burner down to maintain a consistent temperature until the cool down. Since the burner never shut off on these dryers (unless the high limit thermostat kicked the burner off), they dried fairly quickly. I believe it starts out at the full 37,000 btu heat output on the low temperature then quickly throttles the burner down but don’t know since I’ve never used or owned one of those Kenmore gas dryers with the modulating burner. All I know is what I’ve read in the archives about these Kenmore soft heat gas dryers.

I had a slightly newer Kenmore gas dryer. On regular heat the burner cycled on more than on delicate heat. All controlled by the cycle setting and thermostat to regulate the proper temp.

Hi Mark, this dryer used a unique modulating burner that was only used in this one model dryer. This was the only time that a new format Kenmore dryer had a 30,000 BTU burner.

Whirlpool dryers marketed under the whirlpool name had 30,000/20,000 BTU burner but they were not modulating.

This dryer ran at either 20 or 30,000 BTUs but then it would modulate down when it was put on delicate it only fired at 20,000 BTUs.

I’m not sure if the final temperature was different on delicate or not I have one of the same dryers and I’ve actually never used it .

If you look at the wiring diagram you can see if putting it on delicate is more than just the input solenoid on the burner.

When did you get this dryer I’m anxious to hear how you like it it should be a very nice dryer.

Thank you for all the replies!

Hi John.  I haven't bought this dryer (well, not yet anyway!).  It's listed for sale here in Southern California, along with a couple of other interesting ones that I'm thinking about.  Thanks for all the info.  As for whether or not selecting delicate also reduces the temperature as well as reducing the heat input, perhaps I should buy it and do some testing!  I also don't know if there is a possibility of adjusting the gas valve so that you can set a different exhaust temperature, based on the capillary tube input (while still achieving maximum heat input initially until it tapers down).  Certainly a nice and interesting example of a vintage machine.

Parts diagrams may show if there's more than one operating temperature thermostat, if diagrams are available anywhere.

Hi Mark, I will look at the wiring diagram on our gas LK tomorrow when I am at the WH and post what I find and let every one know if delicate has its own lower finial temperature.

Thank you, John.  If delicate doesn't have a lower temp, it might even be possible to add some kind of "bias heater" to the capillary tube or bulb perhaps.  That would be a fun project!

Hi Mark, yes a little heater on the capillary board would be an excellent way to give you a lower temperature for a delicate cycle on this type of dryer.

That was the one problem with modulating burner gas dryers like this was the temperature would run somewhere between 155 at 165° not hot enough to damage any normal clothing but some delicate things should not be dried quite that hot.

When I added the modulating burner to my easy clean 100 I just let the modulation system control the temperature and I put 180° safety thermostat in case something goes wrong on the blower housing.

I also added a little switch on the control panel if I flip the switch to normal the burner will just cycle on and off as the original one level burner did so I can have a nice low temperature, in fact it gives me four different drying temperatures ranging from about 150 to 125° works very nicely but 95% of the time I just let it run at the full temperature I don’t have a lot of delicates.
