Doubt this was intended as an icebox. Definitely from the early 20s after Kelvinator set up in Detroit. This big a unit would have had a separate refrigeration unit (also by Kelvinator) in the basement. The empty (ice section) would have had the evaporator coils and a couple of slots for ice cube trays, with the piping going through the hole in the back down to the basement. You see things like this fairly often in grand old Detroit houses and sometimes they're still in use(sometimes they're fully built-in; though usually those are branded Chrysler-Koppin). One or two service people will still work on them around here. There's often a dusty old belt-driven compressor somewhere in the basement or near the service entrance. Kool unit.
