Dishwasher installed new in the kitchen 30+ years ago has always run great.

Earlier this week, when I went to run it, there was standing water in the base. Ran it and noticed a strange noise when the pump was filling or draining (not sure which -- but I think draining).

Dishes came out clean, then a day or two later, standing water again. I scooped it out, nothing blocking the drain out of the disposal, so I turned off the water feed to it. Two days later and no standing water.

I suspect something in the fill valve is clogged open. Can this be cleaned? I wanted to mention the pump noise in case that's related, because it had never made that noise before, and it would be a heck of a coincidence if two things broke at once.

Any advice?

The pump is not functionally involved in the machine filling with water, although it may run concurrently with filling at some points of the cycle.

The inlet valve surely either has caught a bit of debris that is obstructing the diaphragm from fully closing or it's internally worn.  Whether it can be disassembled for cleaning (or rebuild if a compatible kit of parts can be found) depends on the design of it.  Replacement of the valve may be the required route.

Bad inlet valve

Replace the inlet valve and be done with it, unless you want to test your homeowners insurance.
