Good afternoon, I'm not sure if this belongs in the right thread, but here goes nothing.
Who was the first to come up with the tough on dirt campaign? Who started it?

Tough On Dirt. Gentle On Your Clothes

Googling it seems like it was Whirlpool used that tag line for their laundry appliances.
Either 1983 or 1986 Whirlpool featured print adds and TV spots.

tough on dirt

Did anybody else in the appliance industry follow suit with a similar campaign? If so, who else did and what was their approach?

whirlpool

Here's a video of a whirlpool washer in action. It may be an older model, but it still applies until they were last made in 2010. I bet these could clean construction clothes and dirty overalls.

wash wars

Who was the first one to kick off the tough on dirt wash wars? How did whirlpool and others approach this battle?
