I remember the first time seeing one of these without the front panel in place and realizing that the base is a standard FF washer with the back facing the front and the top is put on "backwards". This allowed it to have a removable front panel that made it easy to be fixed from the front.
Why they didn't just do that with all the washers back then? One of the big complaints from repair techs, of all brands back then, was how difficult it was make repairs to many washers when a machine is installed in a customers home. Whirlpool made belt-drives and as popular as they were back then, were not easy to repair because there was no access to the innards without a hassle. With the 1986 change by Whirlpool in to a easily removed cabinet they pretty much won the market. |

Whirlpool's first model was LB5500XK which is 1982 model-year. Early direct-drive had the mechanism oriented with the motor and pump toward the right-rear corner instead of at the front. |
