Who do you think had the most ingenious washing machine design? Why or why not? All opinions are welcome.

I find the old 2-belt Maytag design to be elegant in it's simplicity.

I'd go with whirlpool

I like their direct drive design as it was ahead of their time.

Classic Maytag. The dependable brand, so dependable that there are still models from the 70s 80s and 90s still running flawlessly everytime, made with some of the most reliable materials. From the long stroke aggressive agitation to its sleek styling, a perfect combo. But I also would say the Direct Drive generation as well, as another member stated it truly was before it’s time and they will forever be iconic machines, the old SQ Maytags and Direct Drives are my personal iconic favorites.

GE filter-flo and whirlpool direct drive

I like the GE filter-flo design because the machine had a 1 speed motor with a 2 speed clutch. It always ran at full speed, whether you had it on gentle or my favorite speed - normal. Their agitators were a work of art. As for whirlpool direct drives, it's interesting how they use no belts or pulleys, but use a spin clutch and a coupler. They must have incredibly strong agitation. I bet whirlpool transmissions use and hold a lot of oil in their gearboxes.

I’m part of the newer generation, like some have stated- dependable care and direct drives are innovative in reliability. I’m learning to appreciate those machines.
I go for really creative, weird ones!

Neptune TL - while it certainly has its flaws, it’s a really cool washer. One of the best for cleaning comforters.

Calypso- never had one but always liked the idea of a bouncing wash plate.

Fisher & Paykel, SmartDrive design, Intuitive models with software/firmware that auto-senses the water level, and the fabric type/mix for an appropriate agitation speed.
