Went to a customer of ours today, an appliance tech had their four year old Electrolux gas dryer disassembled.

She told me they left the house with the dryer running, when they came back the dryer was still running and the house reeked of gas.

The tech said it was the gas valve.

How is something like that possible?

Possible but pretty unlikely, hopefully the tech found the problem.

Every couple of years we see a dryer gas valve that is leaking gas through the valve, it is pretty unlikely because there are 2 valves in series and both have too fail to close to have gas escape.

The dryers I have seen do this were usually stored in very damp conditions unused with the gas line disconnected and moisture got into the valve and corroded the valve seats.

I actually think this might be happening to my EFLS627 gas dryer. It came with the house and is between 5-6yrs old. When I run it I’ve noticed a quick whiff of gas smell. It’s intermittent and was NOT ever there before.
I’ll be monitoring it in case it gets to repair point.

I never got confirmation that it was in fact the gas valve, that was just what the homeowner mentioned.

Pretty scary situation whatever the cause. The dryer was running, the house had a strong odor of gas and their two dogs were right next to the laundry room.

They called NJ Natural Gas who showed up very quickly.

Personally, I would be looking for a new dryer.
