Pictures for reference - the washer appears to be a 1970s model and I'd have to guess early 80s for the GE dryer. |

Back then, most people had more common sense. Just replace what's broken instead of forking over more for a matched. Appliance were not a cheap purchase back then but they were made in America when people took pride in their work and a living wage was paid out, even a pension.
It doesn't surprise me these are still going 45 years later. Dryers are simple devices, it doesn't take much to keep them going, especially older stuff like this that's simpler and better built. I see posts about dryers being "tired" or "worn out." Pffft, it's a motor, belt, drum, rollers/bearing, maybe glides, and a timer. that's about it. About the only thing that makes an appliance "worn out" or "tired" is its appearance. Everything else is easily replaced. As far as the washer still going, well, it's a Maytag....from the days when it was in its prime. That should surprise nobody. I don't get the least bit surprised when I see a 1920's Maytag wringer washer still chugging along, either. |

It’s very possible these machines were bought at the same time, somebody may have read Consumer Reports bought the Maytag based on the good rating and the GE dryer was rated better than a Maytag at that time as was Whirlpool and even Frigidaire 1-18 was top rated.
Maytag dryers were more expensive than any other brand and as Dan mentioned many people didn’t buy matched pairs anyway they tried to buy the best washer and the best dryer for their budget etc.
In the 70s Maytag sold more than 4 times as many washers as dryers most manufactures of course so many more washers than dryers, many homes didn’t even have a dryer yet.
GE electric dryers and whirlpool built gas or electric dryers are both much more reliable than a Maytag dryer in the 70s and 80s for that matter. So it was a wise consumer that mixed things up a little bit.
