The picture of the Maytag washer.
What are the two black things under the lid?

I believe the round piece is the water level trigger.  The top of the agitator rises up to actuate a mercury switch in the lid.  The Water Level Control dial varies the pressure required to engage the mercury switch.  The lever is the off-balance trigger, engaged by the agitator top bumping it to trip and break the circuit through another mercury switch in the lid.

I'm sure someone will provide a correction if any of those details are wrong.

You got it all right, Glenn!

I used to call the black button, the "belly button," a term which my mother did not like us to use.

Trade magazines featured ads for Maytag Sales and Service people to sell the adjustable water level control to bring that feature to the older AMP machines, one of the features early Maytags lacked.
