Hey. Moms dryer was working fine this morning until it wasn't. The clothes were almost dry when it stopped but now it's not heating. It's 24 years old and has only needed a new blower in that time. Where to begin. I'm having to diagnose over the phone at the moment cause I'm working. Gas coils? Hi temp switch...vent is clean. Or maybe igniter? I can't get down there for a couple more days.

“The clothes were almost dry when it stopped but now it’s stopped heating.”

Do you mean the dryer quit running altogether or it quit heating towards the end of the cycle but was still running?

Sounds like a issue with the gas valve coils.

Any of those points could be the fault, and a few others.  On-site diagnosis is required to check them all.  Look up the model at AppliancePartsPros or other sources that have diagrams to see the various components.

I had my dad open the panel and just watch. The igniter glowed and mom said it finally lit. I'm thinking more towards the coils. They are cheap enough. Oh and my age above is incorrect...it's 29 years old. I know better than to try to post when I'm 🥱 sleepy.

It finished the cycle and shut off. But she said they had already cooled completely. I was about to fall asleep when I wrote the initial post. But it did finally light later.

Yes I’d say that sounds like the coils. Looks like Whirlpool coil kit is part number 279834.

Change the burner coils

However, it can be a pain in the neck on that model, because the gas valve is located right under the duct that goes up into the back of the drum.

I had to do this about six months ago. It’s very difficult to get the two screws out of the burner valve, but it can be done.

It would not hurt at this age to take the whole dryer apart and lubricate the rear rollers, idler, pulley and possibly change the belt. Also check and make sure the blower is not starting to come loose again from the motor shaft.

Nice thing about this washer and dryers that use most of the same parts the regular Maytag‘s did

We still have a couple hundred customers that have these machines they’re great money making machines because every couple years there’s something wrong with them and they’re usually worth repairing until the damper in the washer. Craps out that’s what usually kills these in our area.

John

Well now this morning it won't light again. She says the igniter isn't glowing either. After tonight I'll be on vacation and can lay eyes on it myself.

I’d check the gas valve coils, igniter, and flame sensor since any of those could cause it not to heat. I’d also check the thermostats since they tend to get weak after many years of service.

Some preventive silicone grease could solve that problem.

Well it turned out to be the igniter. Everything tested out. I went ahead and swapped the coils while I was in there since I had them ($8). Cleaned everything inside and serviced it. Brought my dryer vent cleaning brush that goes in a drill and scrubbed the whole duct while I was down there. The old igniter had a crack. It's the original one. If this new one lasts as long we will be in good shape. Thanks for the advice. John, thanks for the warning about reaching the coils. It helped knowing ahead of time that they are in the very back. But it's fixed now and Mom's happy. (Dad too since we didn't have to buy a new set).

Maytag gas stack dryer

Heating again, good job, Greg your parents are very fortunate to have a son that can help them with things like this.

Igniters on gas dryers are very durable. Most dryers will never need one in their lifetime, but they do occasionally fail for unknown reasons.

John.

She just texted me it's working fine and the clothes dried much faster. A fully functioning igniter in addition to a full clean out makes a huge difference.
