In the process of refurbishing my 1994 Kenmore direct drive. The timer seems to work fine, except after the full tub rinse, it will do 2 spray full rinses and then a 3 second spray rinse towards the very end. I'm not sure, but I believe this maybe due a bad timer. The timer is original. The water inlet valve is brand new.

Model number: 11092583210

Hard to say unless someone here has this exact model and confirm proper operation. Whirlpool/Kenmore was constantly playing around with spray rinses in their belt and direct drive machines and never really settled on any particular sequence although most of them had a spray rinse before and after the final spin. In any case, I would not be complaining about better rinsing unless you use fabric softener. There may be a schematic/timer chart somewhere hidden in this machine, usually inside the console. I know where they were on Maytags but not WP/KM machines.

I’ll have to look. Would it help to have the serial number? CD3902184 The part number for the timer is: WP3946471.

Likely have a timer going bad

No water is supposed to spray in in the last one or two minutes of the spin cycle. However it looks like this is happening in the first two minutes so you are probably OK at least for now.

If it’s doing this, the timer is failing I’ve seen them fail in this manner on several occasions If it’s early in the spin cycle, I wouldn’t worry about it, like Dan said it’ll just improve the rinsing, but I don’t think it’s supposed to do it anyway.

My only concern is it does this near the very end of the spin cycle; which leaves the clothes more wet than normal. I’m going to just replace it. But it is kind of neat it does a full tub rinse and two full spray rinses

Hi Matthew, yes, if it’s doing this near the end of the cycle as you originally said, you probably need to replace the timer.

In your video, it showed all this happening in the first two minutes, which wouldn’t hurt anything if it spins for a couple minutes after the last spray of water, so I sort of revised my post based on your video.

Thank you. Pretty strange how when a timer is beginning to fail, it adds an extra spray rinse lol. I would have thought with a failing timer it would just stop or maybe fail to advance to the next cycle.

I can confirm with a brand new timer, the 3 second spray rinse remains. So this must have been a part of the original design.

That's odd.  Spray rinses operate via an intermittent cam (which I believe rotates continuously whenever the timer motor runs) and normally are consistent in duration.  There's no tech sheet on the machine with a timer sequence chart to confirm the behavior?  I've been unable to find it online by the document number referenced on the parts diagram/list.

Hopefully it can be determined from this. Here is a larger view.

Right there beneath the Warning box:  Timer Switch #13-Spray.  Two 15-second sprays, at 0-15 secs and 40-55 secs, of the 120-second increment whenever the circuit is active ... which is during the first increment of the final spin (but not on the 2nd Rinse spin) on Ultra Clean, Normal, and Permanent Press.

Odd, but not particularly a problem as long as the extra spritz occurs only during the first spin increment, no sprays at any other time during the spin such as in the last increment that would leave the load excessively wet.

So the original timer had this issue, now a brand new timer is doing the same thing. Maybe the temperature switch is the culprit? The water inlet valve is brand new. I have no idea what else could cause this.

Any idea how to fix this. Obviously it’s not the timer or water inlet valve. I’m baffled by this

Needed Spray Rinse

Hi Matthew,

It is the timer causing this, it is not unheard of to have the same defect in two parts, how far apart is the date code on these two defective timers ?

The original timer was dated 1994 and the new one was made 12-22.

After trying another timer, the issue persists. I'm just going to live with it, as it does this in the first portion of the final spin. I guess I'll have the only washer that does 2.5 spray rinses lol. Thanks everyone for your input & help.

Hey Matt. I just posted about this not too long ago here, I have the SAME issue. It sprays during the last minute of the HI spin cycle, so I shut the valves off now after the two main spray rinses to avoid having to respin the load. And a new timer for mine costs more than a used machine, no thanks.

The weird thing is, I bought a new timer and it did the same thing. But even with the 3 second spray, it doesn't leave clothes excessively wet or anything. I just don't understand it because the original timer did, then one made 30 years later, go figure? I also tried 2 timers to confirm, so all 3 did this.
