 That dryer was handed down to my sister and her boyfriend from his aunt in the late '70s. I don't know how it was supposed to even attempt to match anything that Kenmore or any other brand ever produced. It was paired with an older low end Whirlpool washer that had a control box instead of a functional console. | ||

Maybe "Matches Nothing" would be a better description.It is in great shape, at least appearance wise, for a gas dryer of that advanced age or oldness. | ||

Initially it was just the dryer that was offered in the "match all" style with the concealed controls but the appearance was a real selling factor so the control panel was deepened on subsequent models to accommodate the timer and switches of the matching washer. | ||

Good condition for it's age on the outside.
Of course, for a gas dryer it's got the typical yellow haze on the inside drum and look at the soot and discoloration around the warm air intake. Dear lord that's horrible. How anyone ever thought drying clothes in LP/NG exhaust air was at all acceptable..... Considering the fine condition on the outside, if this were electric, that drum would be clean. It might have some wear marks where the paint rubbed off but it wouldn't be stained like this. | ||

I politely beg to differ, the drum on my Maytag DG306 (soon to be DG407) doesn’t show any sort of signs yellowing, even have the original drum in the room next to me and don’t even see ANY sort of evidence of yellowing. Only thing that was yellowed were the felt seal that prevents items from falling into the shroud (this happens to Maytag electric HOH dryers, too), the larger outer felt seal as well, and last but not least is the door gasket which looks to be yellowed from heat, same goes for the electric Maytag HOH dryers too since they have the door gasket on them yellow/discolor after many years of service. Yellowing drums and soot around the air inlet aren’t only on Whirlpool built 29” gas dryers, the electric 29” dryers tend to have soot deposits on the air inlet grille and tend to have yellow drums after many years of service and I can concur since the drum on lot 1963 Whirlpool dryer is yellowed after many years of service. I will say if dryer drums and the bulkhead were still all porcelain, there wouldn’t be any issues with yellowing on either gas or electric dryers. | ||

I picture my Aunt Blanch around 1972, in her quaint farmhouse in the country. In the sandstone built basement she had a wringer washer and clothes lines attached to the floor joist above.
Sitting on top of some cinder blocks she had a dryer like this and had to have a special circuit box installed to handle the 30 amps. | ||

The issue isn't whether a dryer drum can resist the yellowing from exposure to the burning of gas particles.
The issue IS the gas particles and having clothing come in contact with that. We've seen the yellowing and charring on other gas appliances so we know it happens. One can also see the damage to clothing dried frequently in a gas dryer. There is also heat from a petroleum based automobile's exhaust tail pipe. Would we want to connect that tailpipe to your dryer and use it for heat, turn the dryer on and rev the car engine while in neutral? Same difference. Unsanitary too. | ||
