I'd expect the Kenmore to have bad bearings, a stuck pump, or some such.  Take the service panel off and pull the the belt both directions to check if it moves freely.

one knob wonder

bradfordwhite's profile picture
Do you have a pic of the control panel of the KM? I think I picked up that washer model years ago when I was first starting out probably 1983

If I remember correctly it has one cycle and one knob for the water level.
I can't remember if it has a filter or a hose going from the pump to one of the lower openings to exit the machine.

I think the Kenmore is…

kenmoreguy64's profile picture
A 1977/1978/1979 Kenmore 400. They had two cycles for Normal and Perm Press, single speed motor, two water levels, timer set temps, and not much more.

Paul, I don’t think the machine has seen a huge amount of use, since the top is not all rusted yet. If it doesn’t turn out to be of interest to you, please look me up, I will be glad to give it a home.

Congrats on the great finds!

Gordon

That Norge is my dream machine. A friend had one of those when I was much younger and I fell in love with it once I saw it running. A true work horse that really worked at getting the clothes clean. And enough cycle options to handle any kind of laundry that comes it's way

Oh wow those are cool finds I am always scouting Craigslist for older appliances. So what are the highlights of a Norge washer?

Yiu will enjoy that Norge. I have one from that same era and it is my workhorse. Handles large loads with ease.

The washer in the Sears ad is a large capacity with a Penta-vane agitator whereas the one Paul is getting is a standard capacity with a straight vane agitator.

Melvin is correct. I will add a little more detail: the 1979 model large capacity machine is a stock number 29401. This basically means 29-inch, 1979 large capacity 400 series.

The machine that Paul has photos of should be stock number 27451 I think. It’s a twin of the 79 large capacity, but debuted in 1977, thus the 7 in the stock number. I believe it was available until the 1980 models came out. Still a 400 series, same identical features to the other, it just started out in 1977.

Possibly interesting to some, the 1976 versions of these had black control panel bezels to match the higher end black panel models. I have never seen one, other than in a catalog, however, the black bezels with white knobs must have been striking.

The 1980 400 series was quite a bit changed. Same standard capacity with straight vane agitator, but the machine was a three cycle, two speed model with no water level adjustment and an ebony decorative insert on the left quadrant of the panel.

Which one do you think it might be?
I don't think it's 76 or 77.
Either 78 or 79

For 78 you could buy a large cap Bol with:
a sudsaver
in all the colors
with a 2 speed motor
with off-balance buzzer
with a SELF CLEANING filter
with a fab. soft disp
with 4 water levels
but it was still essentially a basic 2 cycle timer and the water temps were on the timer. I love this kind of crazy variety. lol.

For 80, the Bols were offered in:(don't have all the scans for that year)
a 24" bol. stan cap,
a 29" stan. cap,
a 29" large cap

The mystery of model and date can be cleared by citing the model/serial numbers, or a photo of the tag.

I remember seeing these BOL models at Sears back in 1978/1979. I thought it was so cool they had the dark plain tub, and no instructions on the lid interior. Glad to see one of these surface.

Have a good one,
James

Hi Paul,

Congrats on the Norge! I hope it is a winner for you.

Shame that the ‘72 700 was too rusty to enjoy.

Do you know if the other Kenmore is still accessible at the estate sale? It being totally locked up doesn’t bother me and I’d like to see what I can make of it. If you can email me with contact info, or list it here for the estate sale, I will see what I can do to get it on its way here.

Thanks in advance Paul!

Gordon

Hi Kenmoreguy64 Gordon. I am not sure if my buddy still has the washer I can find out. the kenmore did go into spin fine only on one of the two cycles. After the last nightmare kenmore I lugged out of the basement I just do not have thing for belt driven kenmore/whirlpool models. The rust and the problems. But if you would like to find out more I will text him today thank you, Paul. The Norge works beautifully I test drive these machines before I take them. I so appreciate all of the help on this website

Hi Paul!

Yes, absolutely, if you can find out if that machine is still available I would love to know! I would be happy to communicate directly if it is still available, that way you don’t have to be the messenger in-between.

THANK YOU for your willingness to help!

Gordon

Yay Paul another Norge saved

combo52's profile picture
Paul, you definitely have luck finding Norges that work, most Kenmores or whirlpools that are 40+ years old are going to be rebuilding, most Norges are just plain long gone, but there’s always the occasional machine that survives because it wasn’t used much.

Having rebuilt several hundred belt Dr. whirlpools in Kenmores to me that so much easier machine I’ve only ever done major repairs on about five Norges and all of them were a pain in the neck.

But I do love the way Norge works when you get a good one.

Hope you enjoy it, John.

wow, one or two Whirlpool BDs that had some rust problems and you're already out of the game on those. hmmmmm

Wait until you find a gunked up GE FF. Or a Maytag that's leaking oil out the bottom.

Hi again, Paul! This is wonderful news!

I should be able to get the machine out of there quickly. I tried to send you an email just now, although it bounced back. I can be reached at B727nut@hotmail.com. Let’s communicate soon, and we’ll get the washer out of your way ASAP.

Thank you again, this is so awesome!
