We may be looking at having to replace the 18" GE compact dishwasher at our summer camp. Like the 18" Frigidaire at home it's made in China, however with a mechanical timer, the one at home is processor controlled, otherwise construction seems to be the same. The problem seems to be with the timer, we're looking into it.
I've heard that most, if not all, compact dishwashers currently made are produced mainly by 1 company... (Danby?) Is this true, and does anyone know if there's any real choice in new ones from actual different makers? Appliance dealers seem to know nothing except for price and availability. It's really difficult to ascertain who actually makes them, and there's a ton of weird brand names: out there: Zline, Edgestar, Fotile, SPC, Galanz, Kucht, Hava, Danby &c, probably of Chinese origin. GE, Whirlpool and Frigidaire are still there, but who makes them? Bosch, Miele are there, but we don't prefer German brands for parts and service reasons here in Vermont. Prices for 18"s start around $500 and up to $1400... way expensive at the top for something that will be used maybe 40 days a year at most. Opinions? JohnL? Did KA/Hobart ever make a compact (18" wide) dishwasher, did other legacy US makers like Whirlpool or Maytag? |

Hi Roger, unfortunately, no legacy US maker ever made 18 inch dishwashers, of course D&M initiated 18 inch dishwashers in the US but I’d call that more of a tragedy.
After WC, I got a hold of D & M they got a little bit better with the plastic tape models, but the pump was still pretty weak and they didn’t perform very well. The tub was too deep front to back Other than that everything comes out of China. I don’t think Danby made their own etc. but it may be made by the same company. If you have to buy one today, I’d probably buy the cheapest one probably doesn’t matter what names on it If you supply the information for the current one with the bad timer, I might have a good used timer for it or of course check on eBay etc. for one if it’s not had hard use that hard it might be worth trying to fix it. "I'd call that more of a tragedy." LOL!
If its turns out to be a timer will do John. It's had light use and we do prefer to repair over replace. I think the advice to get the cheapest new is good, we don't need bells & whistles. German stuff is just a pain for parts and repair in Vermont, so no go (Miehle vacs... boo.) Might be fine in Berlin or NYC but not here. Will report back with the problem we find...thanks! BTW our own PhilR from Quebec, with my"supervision"(ie watching/helping? lol), replaced the Sensi-Temp on our red '61 GE range yesterday using the correct 8" Calrod element and 5 button control unit, parts sourced from JohnL (several years ago), and now we have 2 big burners!... thanks John! |
