I only hear this during high agitation on a full load during wash cycle. Any idea what it is? Listen closely, it's in the background noise. Sounds like a squeaking noise. Any ideas?

Sorry but I don't hear anything besides the normal chugging

It’s like a squeaking noise. Listen carefully.

My machine sometimes has a similar squeak during high agitation. It's been that way ever since I got the washer and I've never really paid it much attention.

The machine in the video below also has the high agitation squeak, and this was a fully rebuilt unit.

squeak during agitation

drummerboy928's profile picture
That squeaking sound during agitation is normal. I’ve heard many direct drives, new and old, make the same noise while agitating. Usually it’s from the suspension. I would try to disregard the noise as it’s not harmful to the machine or is not a sign of anything wrong with it.

The video posted above does make the same issue. I guess I won't sweat it. It's just weird I haven't heard it before and it only does it during the wash cycle.

Now that I think about it, the noise sounds more like a chirping sound. Can anyone shed any additional insight on this?

Noisi direct drive whirlpool, built washer

Hi Matthew, I think I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again you need to heavily insulate that machine because you’re so concerned about small, non-consequential sounds that it makes.

Use the tricks that were used on the fancy models insulate the inside of the cabinet put the insulation wrap around the outside of the outer tub put the insulation pad underneath the whole machine as was done on fancier, models, etc., you could even come up with a few other ways to do it by looking at other machines and copying what they did.

Jason and I re-insulated a one to 18 one of the noisiest washers ever and made it an extremely quiet running machine we added 30 pounds of insulation material to the inside of the front panel alone almost takes two people to put it in place lol.

Other than that just except at washing machines are noisy.

John.

Insulation

blockeight88's profile picture
John that you for your input. The interior of the cabinet is insulated pretty well; however, I didn't know one could add insulation to the exterior of the outer tub. I am currently using Automotive Sound Deadener (link below). Could you recommend a specific product? Thanks

Sound insulation

drummerboy928's profile picture
Yes, the higher end DD machines with the Ultra Quiet Pak insulation had what was essentially a giant blanket around the outer tub. It may be possible to find this online or something similar that would serve the same purpose. They also had a larger piece that went on the bottom of the frame. All this makes a DD extremely quiet. I’ve included a picture that shows the outer tub insulation.

Thanks for sharing that, Henry. I am curious, in addition to what's on the outer tub, does the cabinet interior have anything as well? I'll see if I can hunt down that part. Are there any other numbers on there? 8055271 doesn't seem to bring up anything? Or maybe you can tell me the official part number for that from Sears Parts direct?

Obviously I'll just have to live with the noise. Just weird my other DD's didn't do this, but then again I didn't replace their entire suspension systems.

8055271 is the correct P/N for the tub insulation.  Also 8055279 and 8541606.  It's long NLA.  Catalyst model has it, possibly a few other direct-drive models (and also Calypso).  The cabinet has the typical adhesive mastic panels to dampen resonance vibration, although a few more than usual.

Don't forget the insulation pad that fits into the base pedestal, which I referenced in a previous discussion.

Base insulation

blockeight88's profile picture
Are you able to post a picture of a base that is insulated? I cannot seem to find one. My apologies if this has been posted in another discussion.

Do you agree the noise is the suspension?

Repeating the previous post photo of an sound insulation pad, and one of a machine base with the pad in place.  The front edge fits into the front rail of the base.  Half of the edge at the side splits goes under the side rails, half above, else the pad will sag to the floor.  I'm not sure whether the front or back half is intended to be above/below, but the arrangement doesn't seem to matter either way and the rust mark on the pad agrees with placement as shown.  The tabs at back seem to work best sitting atop the back rail.  My 1991 KitchenAid has a pad that has never been removed but the machine is wayy at back of my garage, too much inconvenience to get to it for examination.

Thank you. I saved those images. Do you know what causes the sound (chirping) during fast agitation as stated above?

When I ran laundry this morning, a rather large mixed load, I paid attention to when the sound occurred on my machine as I know I've heard it before. In this case it didn't happen on the wash cycle but was slightly there during rinse agitation. I really do think it's just a suspension issue and nothing to worry about.

Is the base sound insulation pad also NLA?

Post# 1182423 , Reply# 17   6/12/2023 at 20:44 (326 days old) by sambootoo (Moody, AL)

I made my own base insulation using rigid foam insulation from Lowes. It's easily cut to whatever shape you need using a box blade. I used what was left of the insulation and glued it to the inside of the cabinet for more sound deadening.

Rigid Foam Insulation

Which brand did you use from Lowes? Did it have an adhesive?

Post# 1182528 , Reply# 19   6/13/2023 at 20:29 (325 days old) by sambootoo (Moody, AL)

I don't remember the brand. It did not have adhesive. The bottom doesn't need adhesive, I used an adhesive that comes in a tube like caulking for the sides. Again, I don't remember the brand. Sorry

As I referenced in another discussion, I bought (6 years ago) a P/N WPW10361353, which is a square shape for a Cabrio/Bravos.  I traced one of the direct-drive pads I had on-hand onto a piece of cardboard for a template to cut the Bravos pad accordingly.

WPW10361353 is also NLA.  They're not crucial mechanical operational parts so go NLA somewhat quickly.

These pads are soft, not rigid/hard.

I'm definitely going to have to get creative with it. Glenn, what is that noise coming from? I do hear it a little on my other DD's, but it's not as loud. I understand this is normal operation, but I am curious to what causes it.

Several points of contact are involved for anchor points of moving/oscillating/wiggling springs and other structures.  There will be noises.

It’s good to be aware of certain noises but sometimes there are just extraneous and trivial squeaks I wouldn’t really worry about. My 1963 Whirlpool for example, makes a few sounds that don’t sound normal since the older style of wig wag is noisier than the ones used on the later belt drives along with a clunking sound that pops up from time to time which is usually the set screw on the main transmission pulley that works loose and usually just tighten it. Most of those 2000’s Whirlpool and Kenmore direct drives are pushing 20 years old so they are going to make a few odd squeaks and rattles but as long as there isn’t any ill sounds from either the transmission or motor, wouldn’t really worry about it.
