short story - pump died after 1.5 years, self cleaning filter self destructed, extended warranty replaced it.
long version - a couple months ago in a kitchen not so far away, started it one morning, came back was off. Started again, left for awhile - sanitized light blinking. No water in tub, but could tell it hasn't finished cycle - things were still dirty. Started a cycle, drain pump would start but then get an error saying drain pump was bad. If you put water in the tub and then start, it would pump the water out and and continue the cycle adding water and then just sit. (the drain pump is not bad) Bought the Home Depot extended warranty and after getting someone to come out, said at first the water valve was bad, then did some more checking and said the motor was dead. He left the old one so finally tore it apart to see what the deal was. Looks like the screen on the self cleaning filter tore itself up jamming it up. Will see how long the new one lasts. Weird thing, is why give a drain pump error with the main pump was the issue??? Overall the dishwasher cleans pretty well but the next one will be a Bosch. John | ||

Johnn, sorry you ha to go through this and experience this. In May 2021 after 15 years of2 separate KitchenAid prouced Kenmore Elite dishwashers, there were no even MOL KA dishwashers availabkle ane I grudgingly chose a Bosch. Turned ut to be a terrific ecision. I got an 800 series wwith CrystalDry. It dryes like a KDS15 to KDS17. It outcleans similar scenarios I've experience in over 45 years in my own homes. And I love I can put plastics anywhere in a load with actual dry cycles.

Hugh, impressive That looks like something - a tiny piece of glass, a pit of some fruit - that is very hard got logged between the mechanism and the filter. It's the first picture of the filter I've seen and it does look extremely fine indeed. Just isn't worth much if it can fail in that way. | ||

filter was pretty clean
The filter was pretty clean. There was only one small piece of some kind of plant/vegetable material that was in the unit - wasn't too hard so I don't think that could have done it. The thing does spin at 3600 rpm so wonder if it didn't just fly apart. But, if there was something sharp or hard that did it, probably got pumped out the drain. Will be interested to see if anyone else has the same issue. A friend of mind has a Maytag version with the same wash system, think her's is a little newer than mine and a door spring has failed. She only uses it about one a week.
Appnut - the only reason I went with the Kitchenaid over the Bosch was the 2 spin tubes under the 3rd rack. Wished the Bosch has some sort of spray underneath their 3rd rack. Definitely would get one with the Crystal Dry. Also, would want one with the extra scrub option, but that doesn't seem to be on very many of their models with the Crystal Dry. Wash a lot of plastics so don't use the Heated dry and leave the door open after. The tiny fan runs along time if you don't open the door - haven't timed it but if I run a load in the evening, the fan still runs the next morning. | ||

John, I don't make any allowances for plastics, the nice thing about this design. I put plastics in the bottom rack if they are bigger pieces and still use Crystal ry. If I ever go back to an American dishwasher, I'm going to be hard pressed to have to be so mindful of where I load plastics and not being able to have a heated dry to boot. What I love is the flexibility of the cycles and options. There's a variable speed motor. Selecting Sani Rinse yields most intensive spraying consistently, even better than using the Pots & Pans cycle with Sani. Auto & Rani Rinse results in my crock pot liner coming out spotless, never before with any previous dishwasher, including the GSD1200 Potscruber. Has even ealt with scrabled eggs on stainless steel. For the more challenging loas, I do use Finish Quantum. After a month an discovering in the manual the Intensive Dry option, I turned that option on via instructions an left it there. After years of dumbed own temperattures and poor drying results I am in contol of how I want results. Far more so than any other ishwasher. I doubt Extra Scrub woul yield any better results than Auto with Sani Rinse.

appnut How did you find out that Auto and Sani rinse uses a higher spray pressure? I noticed on mine that Heavy seems to run both spray arms at the same time and doesn't wash nearly as long as Auto. | ||

Dorey, it was by simple deduction. I seemed to notice far more intensive spraying with the alternating levels on Auto with Sani. In fact, it was like down right scrubbing action. And you are correct, much longer main wash time length than with Heavy/Intensive. In fact, I have only used Intensive once and the results weren't as good. And I odn't like both spray arms running at the same time. I'll use Heavy/Intensive when running dishwasher cleaner cycle.
