Tide contest -- the brand choices for machine winners doesn't include Bendix, Frigidaire, Westinghouse, or Whirlpool.

I can see why Whirlpool wasn’t included and that’s probably because the Surgilator (my nickname for the Surgilator is the Sudsilator) has a tendency to kick up a lot of suds which will result in a suds lock, even happens with Tide HE detergent no joke.

An ABC would suds up things pretty much too I think. Perhaps Whirlpool wasn’t in because Kenmore was. Just speculation though.

Not to forget GE

With GE's fast agitation, Tide was not a great choice!

David, theoriginal GE wasn't nearly as fast an agitation until ater the reesign in 1960 or 1961 when the perforated tub was released. The solid tub machines weren't as aggressive agitation. FFlo didn't ocme out until 1956? Our solid tub GE, that replaced our Bendix, was the non Fflo model of the POD showing lint was removed on dark sox. It looked exactly like the washer in the POD except on the front"bage" secton at the top of the cabinet it sai Automatic Washer insttea of Fflo.

Tide Contest

Were the winners of this and similar contests ever announced to the public?

Of course they would not include Westinghouse when All and Dash detergents were featuring Westinghouse and Bendix among the many brands featured in their ads, some of which are in the POD rotation. The low suds detergents were the only kind that could be recommended for the front loaders and were safe for all of the other brands featured in their contest ads. There were television ads for Dash in the late 50s that featured a repairman finishing up fixing an oversudsed front loader and restarting it with Dash and it showed the low suds through the round window. Of course, solid tub machines, like so many of the early automatics handled large amounts of suds easier than top loaders with perforated tubs.

I didn't see Hotpoint listed either. It's possible Whirlpool isn't because the majority of their production was for Sears.

This contest was going on at the time of my birth, and ended when I was 11 days old. My mom had a wringer washer until Christmas, when my dad bought her a new Westinghouse.

I highly doubt there were any legitimate winners.
