Part #4162399. Cost is no issue. If a timer from a different model will work, please let me know! Our Kitchenaide Hobart Superba KDS-18 has been in our home for over 40 years and ran perfectly until now. This is hands-down the best residential dishwasher ever made. Thanks in advance for your help.

Getting tricky to find these timers in NOS condition but they occasionally pop up on Ebay. There's currently a rebuilt one for $75 if you want to take a chance on it.

I took a chance on it. Not a hard decision because there are literally no other options! Really appreciate your help, qsd-dan.

How is the timer acting up? The problem may be a simple fix.

Isn’t filling with water. I replaced the fill valve first but that didn’t fix the issue. The only dishwasher repair guy I could get to come out then said the timer was the issue. Hope he’s right.

Seems like I am not the only one who’s also having timer issues at the moment.

Well, replaced the broken timer with a rebuilt one purchased on eBay and everything is working great! Shout out to qsd-dan for the help. Much appreciated.

Excellent Outcome!

This is one of my favorite things about this site.

Don't toss the faulty timer.  It might be fixable by you or maybe by the guy who had the rebuilt one for sale.

Just brought a KDS 18 brand new never used. Hope I get 50 years of use! I should start stocking up on parts… I also have a KDS 20, KDS 16, and a KDI 58.

Good tip on the broken timer, sannazay. I did keep it. Gotta say, KDS-18 is working like champ again and I’m thrilled.

Kitchenaid KDS-18 dishwasher won’t stop filling with water

I just purchased a barely used Kitchenaid dishwasher KDS-18. It’s actually the portable version witch goes by KDS-58. I fired it up for the first time to test it out and the timer seems to operate normally but when the timer gets to the point where it sends the signal to let water in the water won’t stop coming in and it will then start to overflow. Even WHEN I OPEN THE DOOR WATER IS STILL COMING IN!! I have to shut the water off manually to get it from supplying the dishwasher with water. I will the use the Cancel and Drain to drain the water. One the dishwasher is off no more water comes in with the water supply turned back on.

Has anyone heard of this happening? If so, does anyone know what exactly it needs to fix the problem?

Yes, that is correct ’qsd-dan.’ As odd as it may sound, that’s what is happening. Thank you for the response and info.

I did look this part up on eBay. It’s saying OEM Whirlpool. Will this fit my machine?

The valve will fit, I've used a couple of them on my Hobart dishwashers including a KDS-18.

The original valve is a dual inlet setup and the new valve is a single like all modern appliances use today but it functions the same. Just use electrical tape on the extra 2 wire connectors so they don't energize or short out on surrounding metal.

Inlet valve, not closing

This is a fairly common problem and one of the many problems that can occur with an inlet valve.

If it’s a lightly used machine, you can take the valve apart and clean it and it will probably start working again.

Portable KDS 58 Only had a single inlet valve as it was manufactured, KitchenAid didn’t worry about the portables flooding because the user could turn the water off so easily if it started to happen. They also were trying to save a few dollars. They also were trying to save a few dollars. The portable was already a very expensive machine.

Inlet valve, not closing

John & Dan,

Thank you both for your awesome feedback! Dan, I did order the part that you said to order that will fit my KA. Thank you very much for you expertise and for getting back with me.

John, thank you for you for the info on the KA-58 using a singular valve for the portable versions. I will presume it will be a straight forward fit with the new part. With that said I’m also never the one to throw away any KA by Hobart part as I’m sure they can be fixed in some sort of way especially the timer. I will also take your advice and clean out and clear out any obtrusion the original inlet valve may have.

Thanks again guys! I really appreciate it and will update after the repair, “As soon as I find a repair manual for it. Lol!! I’m sure I’ll find one.”

KA- KDS-58

Hope all had an awesome 4th!

Another question I have about my portable KA KDS-58, I noticed that I’m able to simply remove the lower wash arm by lifting off, same with the metal fine filter screen. Is that normal? I would expect there to be a bolt or something that would secure the lower wash arm on to the filter screen.

All is normal!

Pete,
The ability to lift the wash arm up off the support is absolutely normal and has always been removeable going as far back as Kitchenaid's first dishwashers.

The downward force of the water spraying out of the arm is what keeps it in place as well as the brass sealing ring that is part of the wash arm support.

Now you need to find a top rack with the longer wash arm so the machine can send more water out to the corners of the rack.

All is normal

Good to know. I never thought it did that. Lol! Thanks for the info. I have heard of and seen the larger wash arm for the top rack. Once I get the machines water inlet valve fixed I’ll be able to finally be able to use it. So, will see how I end up liking the current top rack wash arm. Ironically, I still have the third level wash arm still attached to the ceiling of the DW. I remember back in the day it was a common issue with those 3rd level wash arms getting knocked off. Posting photos of it.
