It just kills me how stupid people are. They abuse these machines by purposely overstuffing them without sorting and using cold for everything. Gee, some people are just too stupid to be doing laundry! How hard is it to sort laundry properly? Just because I'm blind doesn't mean I can't sort colors. That is why I have a talking color detector that uses sensors to scan the color and speak out what color it is. And you can't reason with said user about using the washer and dryer properly.
What is wrong with these people? It makes me insane! It drives me nuts! This is in addition to leaving the door shut in addition to not sorting. If people would just take care of most machines, they will take care of them! We as washer fans get irritated seeing and hearing stories of people constantly torturing these machines. I wish I was a fly on the wall so I can peak into people's laundry room just so I can observe how they use or abuse these machines, especially commercial ones.
I'm gonna get off my soapbox. Please discuss. I, like others on here, am passionate about laundry habits.

If am not mistaken all manufacturers do this, including Whirlpool and GE. At least they ought to, imbalances can happen even to the best of people. The machine should not explode in a manner which can cause severe injury or death to the user. At least this is what I would expect as a customer of any machine.

I think the same is also done with accelerated aging and parts stress except that Ge and Whirlpool has a much lower threshold.

washer abuse and explosion

I get that most machines should be able to handle every load without destruction. The point I am making is that too many people out there, including college students are just plain stupid when it comes to doing laundry. They just shove everything in there until they're forced to slam the door or lid shut, not even bothering to sort anything. And yes, they do the cold setting on the eco setting and expect miracles or clean clothes. It really just gets to me! If my parents ever found out I did that, they'd kill me and banish me from doing laundry. This is another good reason why I do laundry myself. I don't trust others who are too stupid to do it. Or I just help my parents do theirs. I just stick with washing and drying everyday cottons. Yes, I do take my time doing things properly. I want to make sure EVERYTHING goes right.

"If my parents ever found out..."

"If my parents ever found out I did that, they'd kill me and banish me from doing laundry."

It sounds like you have parents that taught you the basics and how to do things for yourself. They also taught you to have respect for other people and their property, including people providing you with a service, like laundromat owners. I think good parents are what's missing so much to day.

Even as self-centered as people are today, they don't seem to realize that abusing the services that they use results in increased costs to everyone including themselves.

While I think I would like your parents otherwise, it seems it would be superfluous for them to banish you from doing laundry after they had killed you.

proper parenting and respect for others

I'm so blessed to have parents who taught me how to do laundry or any other household task including dishwasher use properly. This is why it drives me up the wall when people just shove every DAMN thing into a single machine. They don't read manuals, they don't ask questions, they don't even know or care how a washer works or how to use the proper settings. This is why when I go to a laundromat to wash, I would use multiple machines for each properly sorted load even if it takes up the entire row. I don't care how expensive it will get as long as the job is done properly to the tee. In the end, the costs of doing laundry and the amount of detergent and additives including bleach and softeners suffer because of people being too lazy and stupid to do it right. It happens all the time. I would recommend that you go to a laundromat and just observe their behaviors.

They don't read manuals

Naw, people who think they know everything have no use for manuals, or advice, or common sense. They just expect the machine to do whatever they think it should do. I don't know if people even read any more, when I need to fix something and search for how-to's about all I get is youtube videos. Who has time to watch videos all the time?

But then, legal issues may tend to turn people off from reading manuals and instructions. Who needs wade through all kinds of nonsense like "do not install drive belt while motor is running" or such?

For now I'll pass on visiting a laundromat to observe people. That may be where youtube is useful, you can record it and I can stay home and watch you and other people use laundromats on my computer.

laundry habits

I do practice good laundry habits. My parents would never literally kill me, just be livid with me. Some people think they know it all. I can't stand when people abuse the machine then sue the manufacturer. Not only do they do this to commercial machines, but the home models too. SMH.

Over loading washers, poor sorting, etc.

combo52's profile picture
Really does not hurt the machines much and might actually extend their life a good deal

The worst thing about overloading and not sorting as you may damage your clothing and obviously you’ll get poor results.

Most washing machine and dryer problems come from just the number of times the machine is run,

The water valve the timer the motor, the water pump the seals do not know how much laundry is in the machine, but all of these parts wear out the more they were used.

Commercial washers is like a Speed Queen’s are so rugged you don’t ever see broken gears, etc. in a washing machine anymore split agitators, etc..

As my mother used to tell me when I was young and complained about things that were beyond my control she would simply tell me it’s not your problem. And the fact that people overload and do a poor job sorting does not affect your laundry outcome at all.

John.

I'm glad...

I'm glad it doesn't, because I'm not the one overloading or just washing everything in cold all at once. I always separate accordingly.

Complaining to management...

I don't know how much good complaining to management would do as somehow I think they already have a good idea of how people use the machines.

But then, they may not always be there to witness someone mixing reds with whites, so maybe that's where other patrons can keep them informed.

Besides, if people only talked about things they can do something about, this would probably be a pretty quiet forum.

You know someone doesn't know how to do laundry properly when you're staying at their house and you use a "clean" towel the next day after the shower and it smells GROSS but you have no choice but to dry off with it... so you sort of pat yourself lightly with it trying to get as dry as possible without rubbing it all over yourself. UGH... I know that's happened to everyone at least once..Of course, you can't dare say anything...

Well, we always have to think of the worst case scenario one could ever imagine.

For each model that reach the market, regardless of brand, you can be sure at least 50 prototypes were pushed to the most absurd limits and we have to think the unthinkable scenario.

And guess what, sometimes we fail because humans have an amazing ability to to s**t.

stinky towels and dingy colors

I cannot stand dingy colors and stinky towels that have been washed when you're over at somebody's house. If you dare tell them they're doing laundry wrong, they'll whine, complain, get angry with you, on and on and on and on. This is why I do my own laundry. Some people are just too stupid to be doing wash. Then they have the audacity to sue the manufacturer.
@Mark_wpduet, I know how you feel, and even the nicest of towels will feel like sandpaper when ever they do wash. They run everything in cold water on the fastest cycle without sorting with cheap stuff.

Stinky Towels

chetlaham's profile picture

I remember encountering this so often at other people's homes in the mid and late 2000s when FL were entering homes. Yuck! People would use the machine as directed and everything would come out gross with the waxy texture and scent of fabric softner masking it.

I don't think its always the user especially when everyone is telling them, including the detergent bottles 'wash in cold'. Fabric softner dispenser over-sized with most users assuming it had to be filled all the way with nothing telling them otherwise. Then there is the thing  some US front loaders would mold when the door was left closed. Cycles also don't use enough water if you ask me.

I personally believe a large part of the problem comes from US front loaders not heating the water by default. All front loads should have a heater, hot fills are not enough to compensate in that the water between the water heater and spigot can become quiet cold especially in older homes. Even in my home the pipes between the water heater and washer are run perpendicular to the studs below the fiberglass batts with the basement left relatively unheated. By the time the water gets to be 140*F, a few gallons of cold water has already been purged out. A FL pressure switch would be satisfied by then. Selecting hot or warm may not make any difference.

US front-loaders, even today, are not designed around reality and are still significantly behind EU front loaders. I think instead of US manufacturers trying to create super high tech out of this world front loaders decades ahead of their time they should have instead tried copying 60's and 70's EU front load technology until the market was mature enough for something more advanced. That would mean timer/relay logic, no electronics, simple cycle selections, no spin after the main wash into the first rinse, 60Hz induction drive motors only, built in 1200 watt heater, 560 rpm spins, water use approaching a top loader, extensive air venting, ect. Base models without any dispensers.

This would have given both consumers and manufacturers a low cost, trouble free, durable, error proof system they could learn from until they were ready for modern HE front loaders.

At least thats what I was hoping when I saw the Neptune. I've told this story before but after I saw the tech sheets to the Maytag Neptune and Kenmore Frigidaires I was so disappointed I knew be default I'd never try them.  And of the problems that would follow, to which they did. Even Speed Queen recently had a bad batch of control boards.

modern front loaders

I have a feeling that the front loaders of today, both residential and commercial will run both hot and cold valves when you select hot on the normal cycle, or just leave at the default settings.

More than likely.

In my world: Open the cold valve, then heat the water based on the cycle or temp selected. Much more accurate and reliable.

based on experience

Based on my experience, I have used front load washers, and I've noticed that the cold water valve will open up, even on the whitest whites on my Kenmore Elite back at my house. It definitely did on the normal/casual cycle. If I want warm, I expect warm. If I want hot, I expect hot. If I want cold, I expect cold.
What more should I expect? I want clean and fluffy clothes! The whole point is, I want a commercial quality clean without hassle, used properly or otherwise. I don't just go around abusing these machines, residential or commercial. I'm glad I use Speed Queen Machines who go through who knows what abuse or use, top or front loading. They don't do this stupid load sensing and balancing or any sort of messing around. They just plain work! Yes, I leave the doors and lids open. Rant over! By the way, I wish I had pictures to show you guys.

Hi Greg, as usual, you’re right on the money, if you guys can’t post, anything useful truthful or new why bother you’re not winning points for all these useless posts.

I wish Robert would re-design this whole website in a way to encourage people who actually have something to offer to be allowed to speak.

There are far too many people on this site that have only a fleeting interest in appliances, or really none at all, and they just keep posting to see themselves post and they keep replying to their own posts, lol.

I’ve never blocked anybody, but I’ve certainly come close with you too, and a few others but I can just skim over the nonsense.

Jerome can express an opinion, fact, experience or constructive criticism if he desires. It doesn't bother me in the slightest.

If anything this site is ripe with vintage machine bashing, but I don't let it get to me. However, what I find ironic is that when someone defends a vintage machine or top load washer said person is accused of being all sorts of horrible things.

There is something called diversity. Vintage machines are as relevant as much as modern ones- ditto for their pros and cons- on both sides.

@Jerome: I believe you. In fact I fully agree with you. Thus far you've said nothing wrong in my eyes.

Everyone is entitled to a washer with the design features that they feel is best and which suits them best. Thats the whole point of a free, open market.

Unfortunately speaking to the contrary just so happens to be deeply upsetting to some members of this forum.

There is nothing wrong with wishing that in 2023 I could walk into an appliance store and buy a brand new inbox GE filter flo, center dial Maytag or a 1970s AEG, Phillips, Hoover or Miele or front load.

At least I notice that Jerome stated what he said as a "feeling" and not as fact, and then when questioned he backed up why he felt that way. If you think he's wrong have the courtesy to explain why.

It's curious that at least one person attacking him often posts stuff as if it's fact, and then won't back it up or take it back, and then when pressed will insult those who disagree with him.

I had a long reply all ready to go then I thought better of it.

All I'll say is that the direction this thread took is a bit troubling to me. By nature this website is dedicated to appreciation for appliances. It's kind of a niche subject in the first place so isn't everyone here a bit quirky?

I've said it elsewhere and I'll say it here. We all come from different backgrounds and not everyone expresses things the same way. I would think this forum would be a place where those differences can be more celebrated than they might be out there. The world can be pretty crule, so why perpetuate that here?

Just my two cents, for what it's worth.

Yeah you’re honestly right, in my opinion commercial machines (the small household style ones) should always come with a heater, As there is a laundromat I went to where is only and I mean only uses cold water no heaters, and the speed queen machine that are used didn’t even do a spin, It was just drained and fill and drain and fill and Tumble and blah blah, I had to use the extractor that they have there but regardless if that was either a programming error on the operators part or something wrong with the machine, we will always always in the hot water and not just “hot 50°C“ In my opinion laundromats with hot water should have about 50 or 60° Fill for “hot” and then potentially a 70° fill for a setting called super hot

laundry sins

And there should be CLEARLY marked signs telling stupid people (the masses) not to overstuff the machines without sorting and if they do... We all know they will disregard the labels and signs. They won't listen to them! And don't even think about confronting them telling them they're gonna break the equipment, not to mention ruin their clothes. You would think people would know better than to abuse expensive machines. If it takes me up to 8 machines to wash properly assorted laundry, fine! So be it! I'm not the problem if they get mad at me for "taking all the machines".
Do the masses think we're really that stupid when it comes to laundry? We will not be fooled. I can go to a laundromat to observe the behaviors of how most people overstuff the machine to the point where they break, and then they have the audacity to cuss the place out.
If I owned a laundromat, I'm only gonna give them 1 warning, then if they do it again, I will kick them out. If they do it a 3rd time, I'll have them banned permanently. If I use a machine properly in the home, then I will give the commercial machines the same proper treatment as I would at home. That means using all 3 most common temps, proper amounts of laundry detergent, bleach, and fabric softener when desired, leave the doors open and wipe down any seals. I have high standards to not only my laundry, but also the machines themselves.

I must admit... I've learned a LOT from the internet over the years... IN the past, I was not as good at doing laundry as I am now...but I always sorted and never over stuffed...I don't EVER remember using cold water. Always at the very least warm...

but with all the information at our fingertips, you would think this wouldn't be an issue in 2023... but it seems like there are even more bad laundry habits than ever. Maybe people just think machines and detergent are so fantastic they don't even need to think about it?

Scary thought, if people think washing machines are so fantastic they don't even need to think about using them, what other machines do they think that about? Trucks, chainsaws, tractors?

I've gone to a local laundromat a number of times and my experiences is that I almost never see any machine loaded to much more than 1/2 its capacity. Note this is a laundromat that is smart enough to not mess with top loading machines. The majority are all hard mount Dexter's. I routinely see their largest front load machines running less than 1/2 a load and crazy folks paying $10 a cycle!

I've never paid attention to the wash temp, or to how they sort, but they sure don't know how to load a commercial front load washer!

laundromat

That just drives me crazy. Or they'll put too much laundry detergent and fabric softener or not enough in the machines or in the wrong compartments. When I do use the laundromat, I make sure I add laundry detergent and fabric softener correctly. Fabric softener doesn't ruin the machine if people would just follow the recommendations.

The biggest issue I used to see was using WAY too much detergent. I saw one lady use 5 times more than I would use in a top loader. It was an older speed queen front loader the had a pre wash, main wash, 3 rinses with a spin in between each rinse. The last 3rd and final rinse was still billowing suds. YIKES!

Using that much detergent will result in itchy clothes not to mention they will smell like detergent as well. Some people want that ‘fresh’ smell if you will but using more detergent than you are supposed to won’t get you the results. Just use the correct amount of fabric softener or dryer sheets for that load and you won’t have any issues.

We had Speed Queen top loaders in the dorms for the first couple years I attended college. I didn't notice many problems with the way other people used them other than the traditional college student over-stuffing and thinking cold water is the answer to all of life's problems, ya know the drill. But the machines were rarely broken, they didn't smell or anything, so whatever people wanna do.

I think it was my junior year when they renovated a lot of the dorms and at that time they got rid of the top load washers and put in front load Speed Queens. An email went out letting students know that starting that year they would need to bring high efficiency detergent and also provided some other tips on using the new machines. It was apparent that most students disregarded the message because it wasn't long before those washers started suffering breakdowns and they also stank to high heaven. I imagine it was mold city up in there, so I quit using the dorm's laundry facility and started taking my clothes to my then girlfriend's house to wash every two weeks. was a pain to do that but I couldn't get past the thought that those front load washers had become gross due to neglect.

When I was living in a dorm there wasn't enough dryers to keep up with the washers, so you'd have to wait for a dryer. As soon as a dryer became available someone would grab all their sopping wet clothes out of the washer before it had time to finish its final spin, and throw them in the dryer, multiplying the problem. It was a long time ago, but looking back to reply #32, it does seem as if the coeds were the biggest offenders.

Speaking of using detergent and softener compartments, and being able to read, when I was looking at reviews for certain top loaders a common complaint seemed to be that the laundry powder didn't fully dissolve when you put it in the detergent compartment. I used one of those machines, and it clearly said on the compartment "liquid detergent only", and the instructions and manual told you to put powdered detergent in the bottom of the tub before filling. I thought it was especially funny on the youtube videos where the reviewers are trying to sound so professional and knowledgeable.

the mold smell

The mold smell on top of overstuffing really would drive me insane. This is why I separate everything, even if it takes multiple dorm machines. So what if college students get mad? At least they're done properly.

running it empty with bleach

Yesterday, I ran the front load Speed Queen Horizon empty with just bleach and hot water, or so I thought. I did notice that the hot water cooled down. I put it on hot, heavy, and normal. I suspected the people didn't wipe down the seal or leave the door open.

sexist

How is that sexist? I've been around guys who DO scrutinize the detergent label and measure to a tee according to the load. He'd also scrutinize the load size and set the controls accordingly. I've watched my dad do the laundry when I was young. So tell me, how am I sexist? And we always used the heaviest cycle.

Greg luxflairguy just seems to have a blind hatred of certain members here to the point that he will jump at any pretense to take offence to try to get someone banned.

While I'm sure Greg thinks he's the epitome of what it means to show courtesy and respect for other members with statements like "SHUT THE FUVK UP!" and "You are disgusting and I'm blocking you from now on!", he can't seem to get his facts straight. Much the same as another member here who complains about others not being factual when he can't back up what he says. It's easier to hurl invective and try to get someone banned than to disagree in an intelligent and polite manner.

So Greg claims to have Jerome blocked, yet somehow he's still taking offence at what he supposedly said. Strange.

You can’t block anyone on AW that I am aware of unless you click “hide members profile” or something.

It’s interesting how luxflairguy says Jerome is being sexist and so forth and taking offense to it, but the most offensive thing is how he basically told Jerome to shut the f-bomb up.

In fact, lucflairguy snapped at me awhile back since I mentioned why I don’t have a membership on here since I like to devote that money towards that machines and such and got a response with him saying “pay up or shut up”

Luxflairguy, if you want people to respect you, treat them the way you wanted to be treated. By snapping at people will just cause them to snap back at you. It’s interesting when Boomers such as you complain on how younger folks don’t respect anyone etc. but yet seem to be on a high horse and like to lecture people and have a attitude and when people my age say “Enough is enough, I am tired of this nonsense” then get pissed off since it’s the truth. That’s not an opinion or fact, it’s the TRUTH.

Plus if people such as you claim to be wise and have wisdom, then why go about it this way? Not very wise to be combative, conniving, and condescending in my book.

"It's easier to hurl invective and try to get someone banned than to disagree in an intelligent and polite manner."

As both a casual observer and a participant I regret to say this has become the internet as a whole in the last 4 to 5 years. In varying degrees I'm seeing it in almost every chat forum, social media site and discussion feed. Claim to be some type of senior authority or of unmatched moral superiority, fling ad hominem personal attacks, illicit a defense response back, then report/ask mods user be banned on the basis being belligerent all while flashing a right minded demeanor.

How or why that is I have theories, I'll also let the experts figure it out, however I think the rest of us need to stand up to it in a way that keeps the internet open for everyone rather than letting a handful of angry individuals curate what everyone can read, see or post.

@Maytag85: Well said. Nothing more I can add other than stand up for others but at the same time don't get emotional. Being upset is their goal. Misapplied behaviorism is a form of copium for these folks. Ruin the person's credibility or character, then make them mad/upset/emotional enough times developing an aversion to the point they stop participating in the forum. Don't let them have their way.

Let me be the one to say you are real, you deserve to have a voice, and I genuinely like you. And of course there is your talent which I love

27 was my post and I don't think I said anything sexist whatsoever. Even went back and read it a couple times to make sure because it's been a couple weeks ago since I posted on this thread. I think you might have me confused with another poster.

The numbering sequence as it relates to specific posts may be different from his point-of-view if the individual of question has anyone in the discussion blocked from his feed vs. numbering of posts for members who don't have anyone blocked.

This thread has gone this this many responses, that's a lot of abused public laundromat equipment, but now how did this turn to automaticwasher.org member abuse?!

Seems as though whatever laundromat I'd been to--a current chain/franchise in my area known as Skylar Laundromat, which recently opened a new location in part of a former record store housing a couple pet care-oriented businesses, maybe I've gots to go to and try someday...

Anyway, people around where I live might evedentally treat laundry equipment here a lot better, I'd seldom encountered a machine, washer or dryer which would not work properly, work at all, or just be tagged out of order or out of service...

People Are Stupid

lotsosudz's profile picture
I think by now, we can all agree that the general public are stupid when it comes to laundry. It does no good to bitch and kvetch about it, as it won't change anything!
It doesn't help that the Government Is stupid and forces the appliance companies to comply with their stupidity. And most of all the general public can be led like sheep to slaughter.
Hugs,
David
