After cleaning and repacking the brake rotor bearing, the squeaking sound on the spin cycle totally stopped. Thanks to other members that advised that. Since the maytag is 23 years old, I decided the replace the tub bearing, stem and seal repair kit and change a slightly leaking lower lip seal on the transmission. The last item was the hardest. I almost gave up on removing the brake assembly, I tried vice grips, C clamps and cursing but nothing worked. I made a crude version of the 38315 wrench and that worked (see attached photo). I watched the online videos for removing the lower lip seal and it just wouldn't come out. I removed the transmission and the lower shaft, then I could remove the seal. Refilled the trans with oil and all is good. The tub was in good shape, hope I can get a few more years out of it. I dread buying a new worse machine if I can keep this one going.

5 stars for making your own brake tool and having it successfully work.

 

You should be good for at least another 10 years or so. Be on the lookout for a new timer on Ebay, that will be the hardest part to find. Most of the other parts can be pillaged from other machines.

 

You may want to be on the lookout for a free washer of you generation to use as parts, such as a spare transmission. These machines hold up extremely well when properly cared for.
