Lads, someone needs to get this set! It would be a sin to let scrappers get their mitts on the pair.

Set seems similar to one a beloved member out in Iowa recently nabbed and restored.

Beautiful set, in GE's Mix-or-Match Canary Yellow. Seeing the Visi-Matic washer next to the set, I wonder if the washer saw low use as it appears to have been used gently. In theory, this is a TOL washer, with the suds saver being an additional feature on the TOL model. The absence of the suds saver will make restoring this washer that much easier (just ask Paul, LOL).
I would expect the bidding to be aggressive. The last '57 set, that was still new in the box, sold high and was never seen again. My hope is that the tub boot is still in nice shape for the future owner, and that the plastic snubber within the transmission is intact. Ben This post was last edited 08/11/2023 at 11:21 |

Bidding was at $505 when one responded to Combo's post. Am shocked to see how things have more than doubled so quickly.
Mind you action seems to be confined to one bidder who keeps upping ante when he's outbid. Keep also in mind like fleaPay and other online auction sites bidders enter their highest number on H-Bid. System will then automatically bid on said bidders behalf until max is reached. Current high bidder is just $10 over ($1210) over previous bidders max of $1200. If one examines bidding increment schedule you'll see previous high bids were in $4,$5 and now $10 increments. Next bid must be at least $1220 or in $10 increments over current high bid. Other neat feature about these auctions is no snipping! So called "Soft Close" feature means if bids are entered in final minutes of auction thing is automatically extended by about three minutes. This will continue long as bids are made in final few minutes. Hammer only drops when there is no bidding activity in last minute of auction. "*This auction will have a SOFT CLOSE. This means that if there are any new bids within in the last minute of an item's scheduled closing time, the bidding will be extended by 2 minutes to allow the previous bidder time to respond. No item will close for bidding until the scheduled close time has passed AND there has been no bidding during the last minute." |

Well, when you add the buyers commission of 18% and the Pennsylvania state sales tax you’re already over $2500, I expect to top out at over 3000 easily.
And if somebody is shipping them you can add another thousand if they’re going very far. It is a very rare pair, it’s the first year for the 27 inch GE dryer design. It was a good performing dryer but not a very durable one had lots of wiring problems motor start switch problems etc. it looks like somebody’s been messing with the operating thermostat from the pictures, so I doubt the thing is going to work probably won’t heat. The washer had been in production for a few years by 1957 solid tub washers from GE were not very durable in the 50s, when they changed to the perforated basket V 12 Filter Flow machines in 1961. The machine immediately lasted about 50% longer. They look to be in pretty good condition, however it may be restorable, but there’s certainly not good every day drivers. I hope someone from AW will get them. John |

At this point things are only between two bidders, each keeps upping the other's max bid. This could change in final hours, but so far that's how one sees things.
This tells one at least this battle is between two "collectors" so to speak. Scrappers or dilettantes wouldn't be spending so much money IMHO. Remember this isn't fleaPay, once hammer falls credit card will be charged for total final bid plus other costs quite soon afterwards. Hopefully whoever gets set will speak up and share. |

Sadly must agree with above.
Nearly each and every time unique items are listed on site and go for big money we never hear about them afterwards. Only exception to this seems to be if new owner simply has no other choice but to obtain repair or other advice from here in group. Go and and out of hate with such behaviour which explains why don't post finds all the time. Am that fed up with those who lurk about AW for information but don't give back to the community. Let them do their own leg work. |

I'm sure some of that exists but there s also a lot of unnecessary drama that rolls through this site and some can't overlook or filter it out so they lurk behind the scenes. Your posts are much more appreciated than you realize. |

Congratulations Christopher. I’m glad you got these. They are very unusual probably the only set in color still in existence. In this kind of condition out there.
The factory suds saver system on this machine was very complicated but it’s not terribly difficult to rig up a suds saving system and have a little electric return pump. I did it when I was younger on automatic washers that did not have a suds saver and we used the systems for many years. It’s always difficult with these auctions. I’m sorry I did not know that someone from AW was bidding on them as I am the one that added the last $500 to them bringing my maximum bed up to 2520. This is always been an interesting dilemma. Sometimes we knew who is bidding against each other and I would’ve backed off. Of course it’s not fair to the seller. And I did not announce that I was bidding either. I am very familiar with the dryer and can help with any problems you have with that less familiar with the washer Ben in Iowa restored the 58 GE washer and dryer that I sold to him and he certainly can help with the washer. Best of luck with them keep us informed and how they work out. John |

Well far as AW.org goes anyway. *LOL*
Congrats on nabbing this wonderful and rare set. Like how you operate: quietly, effectively and efficiently. Am gobsmacked you found a shipper going from PA that far out NW. Yes, sometimes Ushippers can try one's patience, but as you yourself said at some point they've got you so that's that. This post was last edited 08/16/2023 at 23:10 |

They should be just fine even if they got wet, that shouldn’t hurt them at all.
The 59 dryer is very close to the 57. There may be some slight changes but I don’t think they’re too significant. Your dryer was all new for 57 and was a very good performing dryer. It was probably one of the fastest and best performing dryers in 57, the Whirlpool hi Speed, hi BTU gas dryers and 8000 W plus electric dryers would have been faster but the GE was very efficient and fast. Only the tops are porcelain and the rest is paint which started to come off with acetone so that’s a nope. Open to suggestions for removing the difficult residue. |

For both porcelain and painted finishes, I agree with James. Start with some Simple Green. If the grease/rubber marks are still stubborn I then break out the Turtle Wax Chrome Polish. The super fine grit will help lift of just about any stain or grime on either surface type, and in fact is my go to when restoring the original single stage paint on most appliance products as the first step in bring back the original luster of the finish.
