We had a visit from Matty & Eliot from Australia on their tour of the UK & Europe last week, needed their fix of vintage Brit washers. Both had been born here in Yorkshire & Scotland and emigrated with their families.
Was great to catch up with Matty again & finally meet Eliot, the time flew but they packed in a load of washing, drying and fun along the way !! From the left , Eliot (ShakiraLover) Matty (MattyWashboy) Mikey (MikeyMatic) Jon (LavamatJon)

Time to get the guest towels washed & dried, into the Asko 1300rpm H-Axis toploader for a hot wash , through the White Knight spinner at 2,800 rpm and into the Miele 70`s vented dryer for a fast dry.

Of course a selection of Aussy detergents was brought over (one suitcase full Lol) and everyone had a turn using them in the brit machines of bygone times.
Here we used OMO Ultimate, ION Pods, Comfort Pure, Cold Power Liquid & Radiant Powder among others , Jon had brought supplies from Spain as well to try !! |

Not long before the washing was unpacked , into said washers and all eyes glued to the action !! Eliot trying out the 1970`s Zanussi SL218T washer from Italy , sat in front of the 1978 Indesit with a whopping 380rpm spin and spinning everything out on the Creda Debonair Spin Dryer from 1957, Mikey reading the Indesit programme guide which came in Roman Numerals and symbols - "What is Rinse & spin Again" ? Steve got creative , the suspension u shaped legs fit into a block on the washer base, this is filled with hard grease which over the years had crumbled , hence the machine suspension leg tapping on metal when washing & spinning, so we cut a length of flexible rubber hose ( bunsen burner) sliced it lengthways, cover the bottom metal suspension leg and fitted it into the block - Voila, jobs a good one - This gang aint half ingenious when it comes to alternative solutions !!

Wow, looks like another great time. Thanks, Mike and Al for documenting and hosting this get together.
Nice to see some familiar faces and some new faces still thinking want to make a visit to the UK again, hopefully in the coming year. We have found some very cool appliances over here in the past year and met some new collectors as well. Hopefully when we visit will bring along a couple of guys from the states. John. |

Thanks for sharing all of these wonderful photos of your visit with your Aussie bros Matty and Eliot. You really know how to photo chronicle an event! I especially appreciated how you identified everyone, its really nice to be able to put faces to the names of members that I’ve read about over the years as a member of AW.org.
You guys have a marvolous collection of vintage machines and laundry products. And I really appreciated seeing Alistair(Vacbear 58) in command of his kitchen. He’s a bread baker like me. Hope you all had the best time ever, it sure looks like you did! Eddie |

Many thanks for coments, yes we do like to have a good time when we can get together and dont need much of an excuse to bring laundry, share food and have a good time with possibly a repair or 2 to keep us going just like we all did at Roberts house in 2001. Al does like to roll out the hospitality and gives him chance to use all the mixers & ovens as well for the baking & cooking food, we deffo need the repairs for exercise after it all. Next one is the Bank Holiday Weekend, see you then !! PS Here is the instruction guide to the Colston Washer Dryer we fixed, useful reading !! |

Well spotted Pete, I too had a Moulinex Multichef which I bought circa 1983 which gave sterling service until about 1996 when it gave up the ghost as I was using it to crush some ice. The box in Reply 3 actually contains a NIB Multichef which I am planning to bring into service soon (but no ice crushing!) as I hate the Kitchenaid FP I bought in late 2014. I also have a lightly used Moulinex as a display item which can be seen in Reply 15
The white Kenwood Chef (also sold in US as DeLonghi) is my newest Chef and has been my daily driver since 2008 or so. Although still working fine (its on display but ready for use) I have replaced it with a Kenwood K-Mix which I got on sale at a good price - thats the one you see in Reply 38. Although the construction does not seem quite as robust as the Chef it is a great deal quieter and it seems to work very well. In Reply 13 you might have spotted the lovely early 60s GE which you gave me when I visited in 2010 - it is on the shelf with a few other appliances from US or Canada. Finally the hand mixer is Philips manufacture branded as Hoover - that's from the late 1960s. |

Recently in the UK quite a lot of attention is being given to what is termed Ultra Processed Foods (UPF) which refers to chemicals added to cheap ingredients to make the finished product more palatable. "Healthy" or Low fat options are often culprits here and of course the UK has a huge ready meal market, which again are often UPFs - the British have long had a love affair with cheap food and UPFs have had a big influence here too, certainly before Brexit food in the UK was generally a lot cheaper than the rest of Europe.
Concerns are being raised about what these chemicals and additives or doing to our health. "Supermarket" bread is another candidate and it is quite shocking to see what is added to it. So, as part of a move to get away from UPFs, I tried baking my own bread - I have been baking for nearly 50 years but it has taken till now to try bread. My first port of call was the ever reliable Joy Of Baking website and this was the first bread I tried - see the link below for the recipe. I now flip the quantities of white bread flour and wholemeal bread flour - the result is a bread that is really tasty and keeps well. It does require quite a lot of proving but that is not really any work at all and the results are worth it CLICK HERE TO GO TO vacbear58's LINK |

I have also made these dinner rolls - more work but again well worth it. The recipe calls for 347g of white bread flour - I now use 100g white flour and 247g wholemeal flour - again the recipe if on the link below
