Hi all,

I'm trying to find the part numbers for the belts for a 57 frog eye dryer, 110.5708711

I know this style dryer changed belts a few times over the years until discontinuing in 1965.

The original belts are long gone, and I can't find Kenmore parts info that far back.

Thanks so much!

Any v-belts that will fit will work.

They need to be cogged belts for proper operation.

I imagine flat v-belts would cause lots of slippage and slow down the drying speed by quite a bit.

This was not what I expected.

I always thought that these Whirlpool dryers with the belt-driven blowers used 3 belts.
1 belt from the motor to the blower.
1 belt from the motor to the drum reduction pulley.
1 belt from the drum reduction pulley to the drum pulley.

This 1957 model uses 2 belts, more in keeping with a Maytag Halo of Heat design.
1 3L580 belt from the motor to the blower AND the drum reduction pulley.
1 4LX460 belt from the drum reduction pulley to the drum pulley.

The 3L580 is a 58" long 3L profile fractional horsepower V belt. This is a long travel for a smaller profile belt. This belt looks to be smooth as I could not find any 3L profile V belts that were cogged. I think this is the same as the discontinued Whirlpool 19427.

The 4LX460 46" long 4L profile cogged fractional horsepower V belt. I think this is the same thing as the discontinued Whirlpool 14951.

I hope these work and I hope this information helps get others running again!
Dave

What’s interesting is when I was servicing a 1956 Whirlpool dryer for a friend 4 years ago, I almost was deja vu since I worked on the 2 Maytag HOH dryers I own so it was somewhat familiar to me. Here’s a photo I took 4 years ago when I got the pulleys and belts removed along with the blower/fan.

Early whirlpool dryer drive systems

I don’t think whirlpool ever had a three belt dryer, and the primary belt along with the secondary belt was always cogged, this was to fit around the small blower and motor, pulley, more efficiently prevent slippage. I think I’ve seen people use aftermarket belts for the thinner 3L belt that were not cogged and they probably worked. X paragraph.

There were some other early dryers, such as a Blackstone , Maytag and Speed Queen that actually had three drive belts in the back they had a separate belt for the blower.

The 60 Inglis dryer I just got recently has the older style pulley system and it has cogged belts. The belt numbers are 14973 (drum) and 511473 (blower). Mine are pretty stiff but they seem to still do the job fine.

I'm not sure if there were other (older) versions of dryer system or if this is the original and whether it differed from the US version.

I know very little about these dryers but perhaps the newer versions of these belts are no longer cogged?

That basic design dates back to at least 1948, they kept that design until 1960 here in the US (in Canada, was kept until 1964), in 1961 they went to another design which was a hybrid between this setup and the newer (My ‘63 uses this setup) which was kept until 1965 (in Canada they switched to this design in 1966), in 1966 they introduced the design they are using to this day (in Canada is was in 1968 when they went ton the newer design). From my experience, my ‘63 dries pretty well and dries fairly quickly. Some people will argue those older Whirlpool built dryers are slower since there’s a inch or so of space between the bulkhead and perforated drum back and that’s why they had to switch designs, but the real reason why I think Whirlpool updated their dryers in 1961 then again in 1966 was because of cost cutting. The older Whirlpool dryers are significantly more complex compared to the ‘66 and later models and required 2 separate stamping presses for the stationary bulkhead and perforated drum back, along with having a belt for the blower and a bearing for the blower. Only thing that’s nice about these older Whirlpool dryers is they don’t suffer from lint clogging up at the bottom of the lint screen like the ‘66 and later models, once that happens they drying performance will slow down significantly.

Looks a little cooked at the bottom the intake plenum :/. Probably from the 37,000 btus of heat from the burner after years of service. Though I don’t think it will affect the overall function of it in operation.
