Hi everyone! Hope the day finds you well. I was recently contacted by a customer with a bad clutch on his 1988 kenmore Direct Drive washer. He wants to service a few other things while the machine is dismantled, including changing the gear oil in the transmission. Is there a particular oil that I should purchase? I’ve heard of using 60 weight racing oil as a substitute for the OEM whirlpool oil. Will this foam up and cause issues, or will it be okay?
Thanks, Thatwasherguy. |

![]() 90wt gear oil is typically advised. However, Whirlpool service manuals (L-46 and L-55) I have state SAE 60 non-detergent, non-foaming, 13 to 16 oz. |
