That’s a Maytag Bluebell I believe and its more like a 1954 machine, certainly not a 1934. But nevertheless its in pristine condition. The owners manual and the red accent on the wringer are dead give aways that its not a machine from the 30’s.

They tangle loads terribly.

Or shall that be a early wash plate?

Maytag NX, this is actually the BOL wringer washer for the E/J/N line. A standard E/J/N agitator can be swapped into place.

This model was one of a few attempts by Maytag to make a bait and switch model, they advertised it with a low price, but they did not try to sell them, this model was a perfectly good machine. It did not come with a drain pump either.

Most manufacturers came up with these nail down models that we’re not supposed to leave the sales floor as they try to get you to buy a fancier model much higher price.

Maytag also built a basic dryer in the 70s when manufactures were pushing people to buy their first clothes dryer, their DE, DG 90 model did not match any washer. They used the control panel from their commercial offerings to give it a very austere look.

Love it!

I made myself a few of these with a key saw and a butane torch. With the Maytag low-post drive shaft it works pretty well in any of the automatics.

I did it because the first time I ever saw a Maytag washer in action I was fascinated by the fact that the agitator was completely submerged so that the clothes seemed to be moving by some occult force.

I have seen these in use before and they are in the top-three "tanglers" of all time.
Anyone ever taken the "Detergent Column" off of their Unimatic or Multimatic to see what would happen? Same thing. I actually saw a few of these things in an open-air laundry patio of conventional Maytags in some backwater town of old central Florida back in the early/mid 1960's. They had coin-boxes hanging off of them. I watched the miserable women trying to get their clothes untangled and washed before the time ran out. Very interesting to observe. I always though this has to be the most primitive public laundry facility I ever saw in the US assuming, of course, pounding clothes on rocks by a stream or river is generally free.

While advertised as BOL as noted one could tart up these Maytag NX washers.

Just closed auction shows NX model with standard Maytag wringer agitator and gas fueled motor.

Other way Maytag cheaped out on these washers was both wringer rollers were the hard black sort. This instead of upper roller being the more soft white rubber.
