This past week I took a road trip to pick up an eBay find where the ad read, “Maytag vintage 1960’s washer and dryer (Brown).” I’ve wanted a copper Maytag set for a long time but just never found the right one at the right time. Until now that is. I was surfing eBay one evening when I ran across the aforementioned ad. Turns out it was an 806 set that said they were from 1967. The listing was for auction or make an offer. Well you know I couldn’t let that auction end as this set looked great in the pictures. So I made an offer and the rest is history.

This set has been in the same house since 1967 when they were purchased from the brother of the lady of the house who was a Maytag dealer. Sadly she passed away at 89 about a year ago. I did get to meet her daughter and son in law who are great people. She said her mother would never let anyone operate her machines and when she got where she couldn’t she would allow someone to load the machine but she still had to be the one to push the buttons. There were many items in her home that she took very good care of through the years. The daughter contacted Maytag to see if they wanted them for archives but they turned her down saying they had plenty. She contacted the local Maytag dealer who turned her down as well. I think they were destined to retire in south east Texas. You really would have to see this set in person to really see how beautiful they are. They sat in the kitchen of the home across the street from where the lady of the house grew up so she spent most of her life on the same street in West Virginia.

Washer model: CA806

Dryer model: CDE806

Oh my goodness, that is astonishing!!! I've never seen a copper set look as nice as that! My dream set is an 806 set in harvest gold, but honestly now I would totally settle for copper.

I envy your ability to find these machines. Clearly I'm not looking in the right places...

I just noticed something about that agitator. I've never seen a Power Fin like that with the 4 additional auxiliary fins and the chrome (gray?) lint filter. Was that standard on 1960's models?

That agitator was standard for 606, 806, and 906 models from Jan 1966 - Oct 1967. The stainless steel lint filter cover ended production in mid 1972 for 806/906 models.

Melvin these are definitely show stoppers. Had a former coworker, nearing retirement age and had moved to NW Houston joining us at headquarters from St. Louis. When he found out my appliance/washer fsscination he would sinnk the praises of his wife & her Maytags. I got to go to their house once and her Maytag set was a 606 set in this same color and they looked like they'd just come off the sales floor and this was in 1979-1981. Only time I've seen a Cordoba Copper set in the wild.

Those are beautiful.  The owner took GREAT care of both appliances.  I can well imagine that nothing would be allowed on top of either machine.

Congratulations on an amazing find.

Wow, beautiful condition pair of 806s

When I first worked for the Maytag home appliance store in the early 70s they had a pair of copper 806s in the display area. We had one live demo pair that we had hooked up.

They originally had had a pair of 906 machines there

You did great Melvin, to get these machines.

Melvin, you did well! The story behind the set is exactly the kind of set we collectors would hope to hear when picking up either a washer or a dryer from an original owner estate. I love that the set has a connection back to her family member working for a Maytag dealer.

Thanks everyone. I’m not sure why the pictures came out so bad. Usually my phone does a much better job. The family is going to see if they can find the original paperwork on these and send it if found.

....up close and personal. Pictures do not do them justice. They are immaculate!. They look unused.

Thanks! I’m excited to get a chance to check them out. First order of business will be to get all of the lights working. Everyone knows that an appliance equipped with lighting can not possibly work correctly without the lights shining. The drum bulb in the dryer is the only one working at the moment. I’d like to get a wax job on them as well. That will do until I can get more time to go through them. I know the damper on the washer feels a little tight.

Congratulations on a beautiful set! You know with a family member being an employee, those Tags got pampered, under her watchful eye.
Congrats again!

David
