SO happy to report the "subject", which is a model G1 !; now sits in my laundry lab for restoration!

I have to say a word about everyone who helped me! This was a big haul in a very tricky basement , in a galaxy far far away!

John Lefever who is always, has always stood by to help me with my passions!

Todd his partner who came and made a difference in hauling the beast up out of mud basement.

Jeff Lefever who found the machine, sent me the first pics of it!

I love you guys you are terrific and have been for almost 40 years now !

See the photos, this machine is going to get Deluxe treatment over the coming months ! I ll post updates here .

IS up on blocks in the CC Laundry Lab.

MMO Is working its magic on the transmission unfreezing it. The bearings feel good!!

This machine was just left for a new Maytag upstairs, so it was working the day it was abandoned.

This is a G1, the first Gyramatic. 1948-9 not quite sure yet. The boot is unlike any other Bendix but Jeff and I think we've found a good solution to that !

revealing the steel reinforced frame under them. Found out from Doctrine today this machine weighs in at
336 pounds !

Washed down the chassis and wiring harness, and the hoses. The wiring colors came back brilliantly.

This machine came with the optional automatic soap dispenser. And it seems to be never used.

Great work and thanks for the progress reports on this special machine. I am always envious of anyone that has the time to go through a restoration like this. Can’t wait to see the end result.

Is the measurement on the dial for soap in cups? Does the doctrine say what the numbers mean?

I have not seen yet what the measurement is, I have a special manual on just the soap dispenser, when I read it I'll report back. What surprises me is there are to levels, one for the soak cycle, and one for the wash cycle.

AS you can see the wash button was crushed when the machine got that huge dent. But John E has shown me how to cast a new one.

I think the detergent is measured in ounces. Automatic detergent dispensing is not a new thing.

Sometimes certain features are ahead of their time. Now, there are so many machines with this feature.

Big Day

jetcone's profile picture
The heart of the Bendix beats again. Thanks to John E for his recent technique of revival, it works ! I ve thrown lots of these timers to the bin. Not any more !

Any one whose dealt with antique washer, dryers, dishwashers, has come across the early 1940s timer motor. We in appliance land affectionately call it the "Black Timer Motor of Death" ! They mostly fail at 40-50 years. Which is frustrating as this is our window of interest. A friend recently created a work around to these. If the windings are good, 8k ohm, then its dry bearings. But these babies are soldered shut so it's a piece of work to get those gears !
I lucked out today the heart of Beatrix Bendix beats again all the way from 1948 !!

John E found if you can solder off the can top on the timer you can get in and re-lubricate the gears. As long as you see the windings are not open, then its probably dry bearings.

Tuf Oil is always in my kit it lubricates and bonds to the metal.
But a new rust buster has come to me- Acetone and Transmission fluid -WOW is this stuff potent !!!

The timer shaft was seized by rust in the timer block, couldn't budge it with grip pliers !

A few drops of this and 5 seconds all was moving again.

A banner day to get the heart of the machine beating again. Next the motor set gets tested !

Well

jetcone's profile picture
It was back to Docrtine this week, the machine failed to power the tub on wash or spin.
So the whole motor set had to come out and be disassembled. We were looking for missing woodruff keys, broken gears any thing. It also would not shift down into tumble just stayed in spin.

All that seems fine on inspection, but I did find she ran it dry and the shifter rod was jammed into spin. So apart comes the clutch and I found rust between the clutch plates. They need to slide against each other for this to work right.

Major cleaning and reassembly today

on the motor plate I m guessing H 48 is August 48

And smooth shifting after a complete transmission breakdown and cleaning and lubricating. The first cup of oil I ran for a day then drained and put in new fresh oil !
