Why does the micro appear to have a Calrod heating element? Is this an early convection oven? I'm intrigued.

That element is used for browning. It's not a convection microwave

What Bob said.  I've got an ancient Bélanger microwave oven (made by Tappan for the Canadian appliance company) that also has the browner unit.   

 

That glass tray is missing from mine, though, dammit....

The Tappan microwave my grandma bought had a browning element in it too and it was even digital with touchpads…

When we inherited it, we’d used it until the heating element up in there was all that worked…
