Interesting!  It's definitely an early one - the half-arm wash arm at the rear of the tub to ensure the upper rack contents got at least some washing is not present in this dishwasher.  I've got a 1965 version, a Kenmore 600 that has the half-arm, so I'd be very curious as to what year the one for sale is from.

That thing is mint! The pushbuttons, the styling, the wow factor: Kenmore really has no equal. Always cherished Whirlpool's humility in so often letting its Kenmore children win the pageant.

Would love to hear the story.

Thanks.

Of course Kenmore would "win the pageant", as the majority of Whirlpool's output was for Sears. At one time, Sears had controlling interest (51% or more) in Whirlpool Corporation.

But the LK dishwasher was D&M and even WP's early dishwashers were made by D&M. Sorry if I misunderstood your posting. I don't understand why, once WP started making such good dishwashers, that Sears did not switch to WP for some of its higher end DW models until so late in the game unless it was a matter of cost.

Sears was famous for long-term contracts for suppliers, particularly those like D&M which they did not own/have large holdings in. I'd also speculate that dishwashers were more a part of their built-in appliance (i.e. remodeling) and stove business (which never was really top-quality) rather than laundry/refrigeration.

For someone who was remodeling and valued a good dishwasher, they were using an independent designer and getting a KitchenAid/Thermador.

Sears was much better served in that era by being specified throughout a 1984 condo development (for example) for 500 units being built (where we have a condo in Palm Springs) and having piece costs be low.

In the late 50s to early 60s, Sears sold dishwashers in the department with kitchen cabinets and built in ranges, even the portable ones when my family started looking, so you are right about that.
