Hey guys, there’s something that I’ve noticed with my Westinghouse dryer. If I use it frequently enough, is that occasionally probably every 20 to 30 loads? It seems to throw up a bunch of Lindt balls on the inside of the lint filter I think this is probably mainly in part to do with the design of the dryer where the physical panels are part of the drum they scoop up lint, and when they gather enough, it throws it up into the Lint filter after taking a photo of the rear of the drum, it looks quite clean

Old slant front Westinghouse dryers

These older dryers with low airflow, often built up, lint between the back of the drum and outside the drum, and eventually the lint would get thick enough and would ball up and be carried with the rotating drum up to the filter, or down to the condenser on Frigidaire condenser dryers for example.

You could get in touch with your Westinghouse dealer and complain but I think it’s just a design flaw of these machines fortunately, not a serious one.

Enjoy your old Westinghouse dryer.

John

Thank you John, so at least I know it’s not really anything

To worry about, and at least the dryer doesn’t really have to be taken apart for it to be self cleaning so to speak

when i first got mine i put a new cord on it and ran it to see how it worked and it shot out lint balls too, at the time i kinda freaked out so i thought it needed a total cleaning so took the inner drum out and cleaned it. found 50 cents in dimes and a diamond stud earing. there was a ton of lint in there

Positive airflow dryers in general tend to accumulate a lot of lint in a fairly short amount of time, that’s why most manufacturers went with positive airflow dryers since it takes a long, long time for lint to accumulate in those machines when the venting is clear and unobstructed.

Yeah with my machine, I just have it vent into the room

With absolutely no ducting just because I like to be able to move it so I can vacuum underneath it. Plus it has wheels too

Dryer airflow

Hi Sean, in reply, number four didn’t you mean to say that most dryers went to negative airflow, yes, some early dryers did use positive airflow, or pressurized drum but the problem with those is any tiny gap or leak allows heat and dust to escape, and it fills up the inside of the dryer cabinet with lint, the heat and humidity and lint also leak out of the machine and into the room where the machine is located.

Hi John, whoops, meant negative airflow, not positive airflow :P. The positive airflow dryers I am referring to thst accumulate a lot of lint in a short amount of time are the Norge built dryers of the 70’s and early 80’s, not the earlier models with a perforated drum and a stationary drum.

Yeah, the unusual thing is my mum’s dryer which is a early

2000s Fysher&paykal is that kind of dryer with no outer drum, and it’s positive airflow, somehow it’s been running for probably at least 20 years with probably only a cord replacement so I definitely I’m probably gonna chat with my mum about getting it cleaned out
