I was able to run our new Miele G7166 dishwasher a few times this weekend with houseguests and cooking. This is my first Miele dishwasher and I’m as impressed as I am with our Miele washer and dryer.

Aside from setting the machine with the local water hardness, the only setting I’ve changed is to add a second interim rinse prior to the final rinse.

There are a few quirks I had to learn about loading. But, once I got used to them I realized that you can fit a lot of dishes in these.

AutoDos detergent dispensing is great. Everything comes out gleaming. Especially pots on the Pots cycle. It seems to have a lot of oxygen bleach because I have some coffee cups that have never looked whiter.

AutoOpen is awesome. We run the dishwasher at night normally so when we come out in the morning the dishes are almost totally dry (water remaining is only a bit on the top of a plastic container or dog dish).

The only thing I dislike about this machine is it often asks you to confirm selections with OK. It gets annoying. If you don’t acknowledge it, it will beep harshly at you.

However, despite the minor issue above, it’s a great machine. Almost silent like all of the other appliances we just installed. Super happy.

Bob

wow...

Congratulations that's some handsome machine you got there. And I do believe that you will get years of very good service out of it.

Our washer and dryer will be approaching 14 years of hard daily service and we have not had any problems.

The washing machine does about 8 -10 cycles per week and if you work on 8 cycles that would equate to about 5 400 cycles in its lifetime.

We really can't fault the machine.

Hope you enjoy them for many years to come.

Regards

dishwasher detergent

What dishwasher detergent are you using? Have you tried Finish Ultimate?

We are mostly using the Miele detergent which is dispensed by AutoDos. I have some Finish Ultimate but have not tried it yet.

Miele G7106 here

Hey Bob! Congrats on your new Miele dishwasher! They are great machines if a little quirky with the loading. But once you get the hang of it, you'll be amazed at how much you can get in there. Like you I added the second interim rinse to mine as well. I included some pictures from various loads I managed to get in there.

Chris

dishwasher

What I would do if possible, I would use both detergents alternately, as in back and forth and compare the results.

Congratulations on your new dishwasher! It's a beautiful machine! I hope it provides you with many years of trouble-free service.

I recently had a conversation with independent appliance repair guy with 30 years of experience and he proclaimed Miele makes the best dishwashers. He said they are the most reliable and last 20 years. Bosch is second best but they only last 10 years. Every other manufacturer has the same reliability and last only 5-7 years. I thought those were interesting statistics...

dishwasher sound

I wish we could get a sound or video recording of this dishwasher running so we can get an idea of how it sounds.

Looks great! Interesting there are separate china and crystal cycles, I wonder what the differences are?

Walter, the China/Crystal cycle has lower wash and rinse temperatures compared to Normal, Pots, and Sani cycles. Also water spraing is gentler than other cycles.

cycles and pressures

Which cycles have the lowest to the highest wash/rinse pressures?

New Miele dishwashers

combo52's profile picture
Hi Bob, your new kitchen and dishwasher looked great. Miele makes very good dishwashers to be sure.
From our limited experience, they seem to be fairly reliable. If you do have problems with them, they can be quite expensive to fix but that’s true of a lot of things today.

Reply number six while it’s true that the longevity of dishwashers is about the shortest of any major Appliance it’s kind of ridiculous to say that the popular US brands only last 5 to 7 years only about 25% of dishwashers are replaced within seven years at most, so they obviously last a lot longer than that on average.

Most new dishwashers do a great job cleaning, and are quite quiet, I really like the capacity of the KitchenAid with true three rack design, and the similar May tags, they hold a lot more than most other dishwashers, especially the European designed ones which are smaller and width and depth and interior height .

So what do you think of the new whirlpool with 3rd rack and extra wash action?

Bob

I'm glad you like your new DW. Since you have a hidden control panel what procedure did you use to add the 2nd interim rinse to every run?

Ignore my question

Bob

I just looked at your machine's user manual and the second rinse option is in the settings menu. For my model, you must enter the service menu to select the option.

options

So what options can you toggle in the service mode? On my Kenmore, I press and hold normal, then start, and release both to enter options menu. I have the dry assist on at all times.

Options…

labboy's profile picture
In the Settings menu, there are several different options:

Enable / Disable AutoDos (Automatic Detergent Dispensing)
Change AutoDos dispense amount (less, standard or more detergent)
Rinse Agent dispense amount
Water Softener Hardness Setting
Enable second interim rinse
Enable “Extra Clean”. (Manual is vague about this and only that it increases time and temperature to improve cleaning performance)

I only enabled the Second Interim Rinse and entered my local water hardness setting.

Extra Clean

At least in the EU, that forces a pre-rinse on any cycle (even our Eco cycle), ups the wash temp and forces a "full" interim rinse.

Especially the Sensor cycles sometimes run a pulsed interim rinse which uses a bit less water, but does the 10s spray long pause algorithm.

In the service settings menu, the "interesting" options I have are:
- a further extra clean setting if the user accessible one isn't enough
- a further extra dry setting for the same reason
- a setting to prevent condensation on cabinets which extends the fan run time in general but especially after the AutoOpen phase

Quick Intense Wash

labboy's profile picture
I was cooking this morning and had a full load of dishes. I tried out the Quick Intense Wash. Wow! It was quiet but you could definitely hear the spray intensity increase relative to the other cycles. Water usage was quite a bit more than the other routine cycles.

Results were amazing. Absolutely flawless even though it was a full load and I didn’t do much more than light scraping. Almost dry when I opened the door.

It was interesting because AutoOpen at the end of the cycle did not occur. I wonder if they figured that cycle would likely be used in a busy kitchen so that might be a nuisance. I’m sure there are people at Miele who consider that stuff.

This is a super machine.

Quick Intense with Auto Open Drying

Hi Bob,

When you run the Quick Intense wash, the door will remain closed for upwards of 30 mins or so after the cycle is complete. If you don't open the door yourself, it'll do so automatically. My dishwasher has front controls and at the end of the cycle, the display will alternate "Ready" and "Auto Open" until the door actually opens; then it just says "Ready" for about 10 mins and powers down.

Thanks Chris. That makes sense. They are superbly well thought out machines.

I don’t have the front facing display. The statuses are not displayed that way in the app so I’m
at a bit of a loss in that way.

I sadly haven’t had the best of luck with my Miele dishwashers (or the fridge-freezer, the micro-combination and the washing machine for that matter…)
My first dishwasher was on its second repair at 4.5 years old when the Miele technician deemed it beyond economical repair. Its replacement is being repaired (hopefully) on Thursday, yet to find out if it too is deemed worth repairing. It’s somewhere between 5-6 years old, I forget exactly.

Henene4

Can you elaborate on the pulsed interim rinse you talked about above? You mentioned a 10s algorithm. Do you mean it sprays for 10 seconds or it sprays every 10 seconds or what?

Post# 1194734 , Reply# 23   12/4/2023 at 17:22 by henene4 (Heidenheim a.d. Brenz (Germany))

10sec was just a place holder timing.

On the interim rinse, the machine fills with a somewhat lower amount of water - would guestimate from the usage data about 2/3 of its normal fill for any given load.

The machine then only runs the recirculation pump for a few seconds, throwing water on the load, then stops.
It switches racks, runs the pump again for a few seconds, repeat.
The rinse cycle isn't much longer, a few minutes, so it gives every rack a few good sprays.

On the EU Eco cycle, that behaviour is hard coded.
The Sensor cycle here can run either or.

Loading

That is some great loading in the Miele. Though, the racks are one thing that did steer me away. It does seem you can hold quite a bit.

As previously mentioned, the newer KA and Maytag machines with the 3rd rack hold lots of stuff.

I have always liked the deep menu settings that Miele allows you to change, like second interim rinse. The additional settings for extra clean and extra clean+? Very nice touch.

Henene4

So you are saying that the recirculation pump comes to a complete stop, then starts up again spraying through a different wash arm? If so, I think I would find this start, stop operation very annoying. I have the 6 series DW and for the sensor program, if there is medium to light soil, the interim rinse uses a small amount of water, but very low spray pressure so that when the wash arms change the pump just keeps running and there is no stopping.

Post# 1194965 , Reply# 26   12/8/2023 at 07:51 by henene4 (Heidenheim a.d. Brenz (Germany))

I just ran the Sensor wash again for the first time in weeks (often use the "Normal" cycle which is just a medium-high soil wash without the Sensor over here).
The load was medium soil and size. It did run a pre-rinse though, probably due to the tomato soils.

Given I only run my DW once or twice a week, it's not running much.
It's coming on 4 years old and is just about to hit 1100h runtime.

The interim rinse is about 6min long.
It runs the pump for about 2sec and then stops for 15sec.
It actually doesn't skip rack on each stop, but only every 90sec or so, giving you 6 sprays each rack round about.

It is a different noise, but since this is a pretty quiet machine none the less, it's not to disturbing over a 3h cycle.
The loudest thing actually audible is a certain relay in the machine switching the pump. That's a very pronounced click each time the pump starts up.
Otherwise you really only hear the water splashing.

Henene4:

Thanks for your description of the interim rinse. The switching on and off of a motor is actually what bothers me so it is good to know about this action on the machine.

Bob, does your model do the same thing during the interim rinse? I am wondering if the USA models are configured the same.

I’m not sure. The only drawback to the machine is the controls and display are on the top. So, I can’t see what phase of the cycle it is in. The display has symbols which allow you to tell if it’s an interim rinse. The app only says “Rinse” and “Final Rinse”.

No matter what cycle I run, even really soiled items come out spotless. The Power Disk detergent is amazing. I have bumped up the rinse aid dispense to 4 mL from the default of 3 mL. Other than that and enabling second interim rinse, everything else is at default.

rinse aid

I bumped the rinse aid from r05 to r06 and activated dry assist to d01. Other than that, everything else is default on mine.
