I am slightly out of step....
But curious do any of your fellows have gas powered washers?

Three most common engines I am familiar with are the Maytag 2 stroke, the Briggs WMB and the chore horse.

I only ever had any of the latter two and now down to one Ironhorse in reserve for the day I have need.
I should have kept the kick starters off the WMB engines but they were in rough shape.

So I'm wondering if anyone else has anything from the pre electric days of vintage washers or if anyone has improvised something to de-electrify a vintage washer

This is not mine...
But I have a very similar X500 with the post 47 Air vane governor system in reserve at camp.
These were rated at 5/8 hp like the Briggs

Hard to get parts for.
Recently I have been looking at 79cc GX clones and the earlier G series clones as a suitable replacement engine.
Adapting a kick start may be a challenge

What have you guys done to refurbish your wash machine engines with?

My local "threshing bee" always has ~5-7 gas powered washers and about 4x that many engines: lots of the maytags including a 2 cyl or two and some of the early ones,~1915,that have the 4-blade flywheel/fan . Also the briggs engines 1930s to about 1950 ?
