Hey guys, I recently just brought this off Ebay and it arrived in my partners house in the US, does anybody know of these records? Or has heard of them, this came out of Oregon both sides are about five minutes in total, I’m not actually quite sure please let me know if any of you have heard anything like this before or seen it, my loving partner was kind enough to have a go at digitising it for me even though he had actually never have heard of Betty Furness’s voice, he did an absolute dead on job, although it is kind of crackly due to the age of it

What a great find; congratulations! 78 rpm, even. That makes them even cooler. You’ll have to let us know the details of Betty’s advice.

Don’t worry, I’ll give you what Betty Furness says

(Westinghouse laundromat, record side one transcription)

Hello, this is Betty finesse for Westinghouse, I want to talk to you for just a minute about the wonderful new Laundromat™️ you just purchased, of course it’s going to save you hours of work, but there are a few things you can do to help it do an even finer job.first of all, be sure to read your “Westinghouse Recipe book” there, some very important information in the book, on three essentials of a successful Wash
:Hot water, soft water, and the right detergent! And just as in using a cookbook, if you follow the washing recipes exactly, you’ll get perfect results every time!

Now when we say hot water, we mean HOT! At least 140° because water of this temperature, will give you the cleanest Wash in the shortest time, if you have an automatic water heater, it’s probably already set to deliver water of 140°, but if your water heater is not automatic, be sure to set it so 140° water flows into your laundromat when you use it

now as for soft water, it’s a washing essential, because hard water contains minerals, which dulls colours; causes clothes to turn grey; makes them harsh and stiff, a detergent we at Westinghouse use, contains a marvellous water softener, but if you live in an extremely hard water area, we advise adding a water softener, like Phosphotex or Calgon, if you don’t know how hard the water in your area is, or what amount of softener to use, your Westinghouse dealer will be glad to tell you,

Now, let me tell you something about detergents, we at Westinghouse use a new kind of detergent that’s made especially for automatic Washers
At a matter of fact, it was made at our request, and we put a box of it with your laundromat, so you can start off right! This detergent is called “All” All is completely different from ordinary detergents, which dissolve into mountains of suds, “all” dissolves into just a few suds

(End of side, one, transcribing side, two)

Now, maybe this will seem odd to you, but suds aren’t as essential to good washing as you may think, as a matter of fact, a lot of suds Can act as a cushion and interfere with the washing action and prevent your machine from doing the thorough Wash job it’s designed to do, and there’s a second reason why we use this controlled suds detergent, when your laundromat goes into its rinse cycle, the clothes are tipped back into the machine, and the dirty water flows down into the drain without contact, the laundromat is set to do this in exactly 1 minute, but remember, Suds like to cling, and heavy suds will cling in your machine just like they cling in your dish pan or Wash bowl, the controlled suds of “all” won’t cling, but rinse out instantly, this is called “free rinsing” and means that you’ll take clothes from your laundromat without a trace of suds in them to give you a disappointing Wash, and one more point, if you haven’t had a private washing demonstration with your own clothes in your own laundromat, ask your dealer to arrange one for you, you’re entitled to it and your dealer wants you to have it, and by the way, if you’re the lucky owner of America’s favourite twins, you know how wonderful it is to have a completely automatic laundry, but if you’re starting your laundry with only a laundromat, a Westinghouse electric dryer should be your very next purchase, your Westinghouse dealer will be glad to put a dryer in your home, on trial, so you can prove to yourself how wonderful it is to be completely free from Wash day drudgery
Well, thank you for listening, all of us at Westinghouse, wish you the best of luck with your new laundromat

Those sort of records were common enough

For all sorts of advertising, promotion and other things.

Small tape recorders weren't around in 1950's or so, but many household's had record players of all sorts. From huge console "Hi-Fi" down to portable units.

Record players most certainly would have been in middle and above class homes who could afford new major appliances back then, so there you are.

Clever chops in advertising and promotion likely felt it was a new and novel way of appealing to Madame. Instead of having to sit and read all that information she could listen to Betty Furness explain things in comfort of her own home.

A bit off topic, but related... I used to own a Renault 18 station wagon, a 1981 model. It came with the usual printed owners manual, plus a cassette tape to talk the new owner through the dashboard controls. The voice was a popular Australian actor of the time, I forget who. The second side of the tape was "some fine music to listen to while enjoying driving your new Renault." I think I still have that cassette somewhere... Unfortunately I had an accident in the car and that was the end of it.

Doubtless Monsanto underwrote the production of that record---a mash note to the detergent formulators in St. Louis.
