Believe it or not, made a few felt seals out of some spare felt wool weather stripping I had. Don’t have one Installed on my ‘73 Maytag DG407 since there’s no heating element to short out on the gas models, though it may eat a few coins and other miscellaneous things but not a big deal on the gas HOH dryers.

Lack of a front felt seal decreases efficiency. I have an article about that in one of the factory "Let Talk Service" bulletins.

Maytag halo of heat front felt

These are super easy to make. I have boxes of that material Frigidaire used to similar polyester heat seals on their dryers.

It’s a good safety thing, but it won’t improve the efficiency of the dryer at all and so you really don’t need it on the gas dryers so much.

The electric halo of heat dryers were probably the most dangerous dryer ever made. They should’ve designed the heating element like the one I drew a picture of, but when you look at Maytag products, you can tell they never had any decent engineers. Frigidaire made their heating elements like this drawing for example,

GM, whirlpool and GE all had far better engineers than Maytag.

I think Maytag should have tweaked the front of the drum a little so they could have put some sort of Teflon ring along with using felt glides at the front of the drum similar to what Whirlpool was using at the time, would have solved lots and lots of problems.

Source of NOS Maytag, Speed Queen and some other parts was an estate auction last year of a long time appliance/hardware store that closed. Owner died and his heirs wanted everything gone so could sell the real estate.

Place was apparently a treasure trove, but as with all auctions things were sold in lots, winner take all.

At first one's eyes light up at all the possibilities. Then reality sets in and one realizes there are reasons why all that stock has sat sitting for years or decades.

That definitely is true for the electric HOH dryers since there’s 360 degree airflow but on the gas versions, there’s really isn’t 360 degree airflow. I put one on my Maytag DG606 back in 2019, didn’t make too much of a difference. Swapped the entire DE306 chassis onto the 606 cabinet since its drum didn’t have the felt seal, seems to run a little cooler. Runs even cool since I upgraded the ductwork to rigid ductwork a few weeks ago.
