As much as I love my Speed Queen TL set for most loads, it has to be said that the washer sucks at dealing with very large items like mattress protectors and duvets. Even thinner comforters and sheets can be a problem. So, I've been in the market for a relatively modern front loader 😱
I wanted the 6500 with the heater. I eventually managed to find a set in great condition. Off down to U-Haul to rent a trailer, which I still haven't figured out how to back-up without looking like an intoxicated student driver. I also found someone else selling the Maytag riser for this set, which I bought and repainted, after getting the friendly folk at Home Depot to do a colour match for me. I then managed to scrape some paint off while getting the dryer up onto it. Oops. Out with the paintbrush again! |

I was astounded at how immaculately clean the washer was. It smelled so clean inside and there was absolutely no hint of dirt or other build-up at all. I took off one of the baffles to inspect the outer tub -- totally clean. Door boot is totally clean. What was rather filthy was the drain hose -- it looked like it may have spent the last 20 years pushed too far down into a standpipe. |

Where's my tub light?! Apparently it had been deleted by the time my machine was made!

The plastic fascias and the detergent dispenser lid were all yellowed. So let's do a retrobright treatment. All you need is some hairdressing peroxide and some Californian winter sun. Worked a treat!

My machine adds bleach during the first rinse, whereas the only other Neptune I've used added bleach 2 minutes before the end of the wash.
This machine also does a good interim spin (about 2 minutes long) before the final rinse. Unfortunately that's the only interim spin.
It has such flexible programming. I really like it. It works really well. At least I think it does....without a window, I just have to use my imagination! At least the door can be opened at any time if you pause it.
Strange thing about the dryer is that the cooldown time is 18 minutes. Seems rather long. Can that be changed? Also, the "wrinkle prevent" option has to be selected every time. Is there anyway to have that enabled by default? |

Good find Mark looks like you found a good low use pair, we see a lot of front load washers that are in excellent shape like that. If they’re used properly, they don’t get dirty just like top load washers.
Certainly wouldn’t make any difference whether you use liquid or powdered detergent, in fact, you tend to get much worse, buildup with powder in hard water areas than liquids. We still see a lot of Maytag Neptunes like this on the recycle piles and lately I’ve seen a lot of them with that riser kit. I gave one of those to Martin a few years ago. I guess if I was looking for a modern/vintage frontload pair my first pic would be a KitchenAid proline pair or a whirlpool duet pair but unfortunately they have a slightly slanted washer tub and still have some of the tangling problems that the Neptune front load has otherwise the Neptunes are pretty decent performers. Mark, you should look out for a Neptune touchscreen pair, those are really rare because of the problems they had with them but that would be the ultimate Neptune pair I guess. John |

Congrats on the Neptunes! They look spectacular. I knew someone who had the 7500 years ago. These are one of my favorite front load washers from the past twenty years or so, along with the Duets/Hettie. |

I miss ours, the ones we had were the electronic screen versions like these (although I remember the dryer was slightly taller probably because of it being a gas model). I wished we still kept ours because I liked them. But at the same time, I'm happy with our set we have now which is an LG. The dryer got replaced because it had a bad motor and my mother didn't liked it anyways, I was also told by a technician those particular models were fire hazards. And the washer got replaced because of a bearing issue and a technician said it was just going to be too costly to fix. My grandfather however still has his Neptune up at his cabin although his is a stackable model with the mechanical controls on it (second picture). I also like it as well. Last fall when I used the dryer, the clothes smelt like something got burnt so I'm going to bet there's some lint that needs to get cleaned out inside.

So I just found out yesterday that the cabin had a broken pipe sometime during the winter and it ended up flooding the entire place. Everything will get renovated and there's a possibility that we may be getting a new stackable set if the Neptune is beyond saving. Hopefully it'll survive because again, I really like those machines.

Hopefully the damage isn’t too bad the motor and motor control border down in the bottom of the machine so if you took on more than several inches of water, there could be damage to those components
Why on earth would the water be left on in a building that occupying? I always shut the water off in our cabin. I even shut it off in my house if I’m leaving for more than a day or so too much chance of risk and insurance won’t pay for that anymore. In a lot of cases if you didn’t take reasonable precautions to prevent damage. John |

Congratulations, Mark! That is a really beautiful Maytag set. Front-loaders are custom-made for large items like comforters and blankets. I’ve always preferred horizontal axis washers. Glad you found the riser for the pair. Risers or pedestals of some sort are must-haves for me. Makes loading and unloading so much easier. May you have many trouble-free washes with your new Maytags!

Thanks, guys. I'm happy with this set. I was specifically looking for this gas dryer 6500 pair rather than the LCD models.
I wouldn't have been surprised to have picked up a set this clean from AW members, as we know how to do laundry! But that fact that this set was owned by Joe Public and is so clean came as a refreshing surprise.
To answer the question chetlaham asked about the heater, it comes on whenever the wash temp is below target temp and it will cycle on/off during the wash to maintain temp. The heater can be selected with all cycles and temps. The ATC does a great job of adjusting the mix of incoming cold-hot water to achieve the correct temp for cold and warm washes without ever needing to use the heater (unless your hot water supply was too cold). A warm wash can fill almost exclusively with hot water if necessary to achieve the target temp of 40 ºC / 105 ºF. The temp for "Hot" is 57 ºC / 135 ºF, so the heater will never heat beyond that.
And sorry to hear about the flooded cabin.

Yes it worked really well and removed pretty much all the yellowing, Douglas. The plastic now looks the same colour as the rest of the machine. I don't have a close-up "after" photo (and I'm not in the US right now to take one), but here's what the plastic looked like before the treatment:
