I think this barely counts as "modern" - AEG ELux T59800

With energy prices - and my partners washer being a combo - I was desperately missing a way to quickly and efficiently dry laundry at his place.

We had to drive a bit anyway to pick up some birds (my partner keeps a few singing birds) and this was on sale not to far from that place.

Got it for 95€ and it is well used, but still in pretty decent condition.
I guess it's about to turn 20 years old.
That should be the 2nd or 3rd heat pump dryer ever by AEG/ELux.

Haven't run a load yet, but it had no error codes stored, all components run fine.
Only minor gripe so far is a bit of a droning sound when the drum runs empty, but I think with a load in it'll be half as bad.

And it's in the basement anyway.

Also impressive how far efficiency of dryers has come over the past 20 years.
This uses 2.4kWh for 6kg load spun at 1000rpm.
My dryer uses half that for a kg more of laundry.

On thing I ain't sure about is if that specific model is ment to have a foam insert in the bottom filter.
Though I am not to concerned about that - a good friend has the same dryer and has been running hers without any secondary filter for years and does not have any issues.

Also, interestingly, this version of control does not yet allow to check the operating hours. So not sure how much it actually ran ever, but it is certainly used a bunch.

But any hints are much appreciated.
I'll report back once I get to washing some stuff!

So, I ran a few loads.

It handles synthetics very well. Washed my partners synthetic sweat pants and jacket and it was basically perfectly dried on the Mixed Fabrics cupboard dry setting.
Maybe would set the + or ++ dryness level adjustment.

The woolens cycle is pretty amazing for when it is from.
It is a sensor cycle that runs the drum motor 3 seconds every 30 seconds with the seperate fan motor and compressor running constantly.
Worked a treat on the home knitted pillow slips on the sofa pillows.

I had to split the 5 pillows for drying and it did OK on the highest drying setting on 2 of them, the other 2 needed another run on the 30min cycle.
That's one of the downsides: only has one fixed timed cycle, the rest are all sensor cycles.

Overall a pretty good dryer.
The cooling fan keeps running once a cycle is done for some reason until you open the door. Or it might be timed and I just caught the cycle ends quite closely by chance.

It could definitely do with a once over with new seals for everything, but that's going to happen at some point down the line maybe.
You do feel a decent bit of moisture in the laundry room when it's running.

Nice dryer and thanks for the review. We had a similar dryer back in the early 2000s - just a regular condenser, though. The moisture-sensing was great, since it used the drum as a sensor, rather than just two metal bars. The user manual mentions a third filter in front of the heat pump. Hm...

What does Silk do? Slow, continuous tumble?

The drum motor is single speed, so it's either on and off - like process fan and the compressor, simple run capacitor.

I started it for a few seconds out of curiosity and it pulses the drum motor more frequently, but that might be different over time.

I took the dryer apart today, checked some components to see what could make the noise.

Actually kind of made the noise worse.
I'll probably get replacement rollers for the front and a front drum seal as well as a drive belt and swap those next month.

Ah, the elusive YouTube channel. Could the noise maybe also be related to a fan?

The process air fan isn't running on the 2 motor tests.

My phone mic isn't picking up the droning well I think, but with a load, it comes and goes.

It's a really strange noise. It's really deep, really reverberating, and loud, but not obnoxious.
Just audible.

Yes, I can clearly hear that noise. That would probably annoy me.

I think there's a PDF on teamhack where someone flsuhes out one of these AEGs simply with a garden hose.

To my ear
