I also noticed the “superba” box on the shelf in the second pic. Wonder what’s in it?

In the late 50’s we had neighbors that lived next door who had a Hamilton dryer just like this one and a Bendix FL in their garage. The husband was retired from the Navy and he had been stationed in Hawaii when Amelia Earhart went missing on July 2, 1937 and he was part of the search crew that looked for her lost Lockheed Electra.

Likely sold by Detroit Edison (local electric utility). They had a promotion where if you bought the dryer they would run a 220 line for free.

I love mine and using it is one of the joys of cold weather. It a model year older and has a timer with two 60 minute cycles. John said that was to reduce the chances of dryer fires. He was on to something because as long as the load was damp, the moisture carried the heat down and out of the dryer, but once the load was dry, there was not the mechanism to carry the heat away and the temperature inside soared quickly. Drying temperatures were not all that high. Permanent Press shirts could be dried on HIGH as long as they were removed as soon as they were dry. The lint collector is at floor level which is not convenient, but that was a Hamilton design feature carried through into the Heritage Series of dryers even after Hamilton came out with the redesigned dryers that offered an up front lint screen. The original Hamilton design was a good compromise between the steam filled drying chamber of the Frigidaire Filtrator and the high air flow design of modern dryers. It produced soft towels faster than the Filtrator and dried at lower temperatures AND, it has a window.
