I couldn’t pass up this nice 1984 survivor. I’m normally not in to the machines with these small loading doors but this 40 year old is in such good shape. This dryer was listed for a while and I told myself no until the price was lowered to $60 and I couldn’t help it. I took it apart and did some minimal cleaning as it didn’t need much. I replaced the lint duct seals and it runs great. It’s all original including the belt. Looks like one of the rollers seized recently and both were replaced.

You won the lottery. The ne pas ultra of clothes dryers found in mint condition. I'm soooo envious of you LOL! There is no dryer which is simpler, lasts longer, faster drying, gentler on clothes, safer, accumulating less lint and overall better than the Whirlpool top mounted lint filter. Single element, full 4800-5,600 watts of drying power, thermal fuse, real gentle heat and a no nonsense timed dry system.
This machine is definitely worthy of being used as a daily driver. I know I would, though not that invested because my Whirlpool built Maytag is based on this system and all I can say is that I love the performance. Only thing I don't like being the timed dry cycle was turned into an electronic dryness control cycle with a wrinkle guard period. You're dryer wasn't adulterated like mine was, so you truly have it all.
Sit back and enjoy the best dryer ever made. |

Here is the modern iteration of your machine, near identical build. I love it. Purchased in January 2013, before my Speed Queen, and despite daily use, sometimes hard use, the inside still looks like new. No chips, rusting, scratches, wear and very limited blueing despite the denim loads. I've taken this machine apart twice thinking I would find colossal amounts of accumulated lint on the undercarriage chassis and a packed mess in the blower housing. To my surprise- a fine dust to none. I was left very, very surprised. So far different than the used never cleaned lint filter Estate and the GE which I took care of prior but ended up being the worst of all.
Mine has a drum light which makes the dryer so much cozier. Medium heat setting which I use for 80% of all loads, other 20% on low.
Only thing I dislike about my model over your model is that timed dry was turned into sensor dry. The timed dry and subsequent wrinkle guard portion has exactly room for 130 minute dry cycle. The permanent press cycle was re-named the "timed dry" cycle and to add insult to injury about 20 minutes before the end of the cycle the timer forces the dryer into low heat. You're model has true user temp control- nothing it timer forced. You're dryer will run as selected until the 5 minute cool down which produces clothes that come out nice and hot instead of cool. On my model I have to reset the timer so the clothes come out warm. No thank you.
Keep this machine in service as long as you can, you will never experience a better dryer.
If you're looking for medium heat you could splice a 6000 ohm resistor in series with the thermostat bias heater or at the switch. You might have to play around until you find the right amount bias if low and high heat isn't for you. But once you do the results are amazing.

Nice condition Melvin good save. We took over the warranty service for 160 unit condominium in 1984 in friendship Heights over in Chevy Chase, Maryland and every condo was built with the matching 5700 washer and dryer. The washer was still standard capacity with a manual clean filterand the dryers were all this model. All the machines were white in the And the dryers we’re all this model. All the machines were white in the laundry areas. The whirlpool appliances in the apartments themselves were all almond.
Whirlpool stayed with the smaller door as long as they could their engineers considered it much less of a risk of children getting in the dryer. But I think it probably lost them sales to GE and other designs where they had a nicer larger opening. The dryer should have a 5400 W heating element in it, the building we were working on in friendship Heights only had 208 V so the heating elements were only putting out a little over 4000 W that coupled with the building, having a constant ventilation system, pulling air through the dryers constantly I never saw a problem with one of those dryers certainly never put a heating element in or had a complaint Eventually because of the very high value of that building every one has replaced those original washers and dryers, we always loved taking out from that building because there was no rust on the machines because they were installed in the nice fully air-conditioned homes.
